Too early to wean?

My DD is six months and I have just started weaning her with baby rice. However, after the first spoonful she opens her mouth wide and and seems like she is gagging. I've read about the tongue thrust reflex but am unsure whether she still has this as she doesn't push food out of her mouth.

She will swallow a mouthful but then won't take anymore. I've tried mashed parsnip and cooked apple just in case she doesn't like the rice but with the same results.

Does this sound like the tongue thrust reflex and is it normal to still have it at six months?

Thanks for any advice.

I'm not an expert as my Dd is 7mo so I'm not far ahead of you but it sounds like maybe rice is too lumpy? My DD does this when there are lumps. Check with your HV but I think the advice is to start off really smooth and liquid (almost like a smoothie consistency) and thicken it up as your baby gets better and dealing with the texture.
Good luck!

DA BLW IS BRILLIANT FOR SOME BUT MAYBE NOT WORTHH TOUTING HERE?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 23/05/2008 17:26

Gosh sorry for the capslock.

She might be better if you can give her something that she could hold herself and put into her own mouth. Something like well cooked butternut squash? That can be help, but will be break up easily when she tries to eat it. Cauliflower and brocolli are good too, they can hold it by the stalky bit and get little bits off the top.

My son did this when I started weaning at just shy of 6 months. He soon stopped. I think it's just a natural reaction to having something other than milk in their mouths.
He always did it with plain rice but once I tried more tasty purees (sweet potato was a big hit to start with!) he got better.

DWP, I think thats Aitchs blog not DA's.

NappiesGalore · 23/05/2008 18:42

why is it touting? and why wouldnt it be worth mentioning? Confused

imo/e whether you go with hand held food or spoon feeding, they dont do that mouth open tongue pushy outy thing for long.
theyre pretty good at showing if the do/dont like somthing , not that you should give up on and rule out everything they reject first time or youd run out of options pretty quick

BLW does make sense to me and if it can stop DD gaining the fussy eater trait from both parents (now grown out of) then that would be great!

However, Aitch's BLW blog has lots of info but I wasn't sure how to get started, I assumed one did the baby rice thing for a bit and then gave finger foods. Probably lack of time spent on my part looking at the blog.

Also, I've read that one has three months to give them lots of tastes and textures and if they don't get variety during that time then they won't experiment after that - is that true?

I might try smoother baby rice as well just to see if DD will show some interest in food.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The BLW forum does look good DA, I'll tag on to some new starters. Your DD is having fun but ... incompetent parent admission coming up ... I can't bath DD on my own and BLW looks like it also means three baths a day!

I need a bib that covers DD's head as well!
