12 month old still only eats mashed/puree foods

DS has just turned 1 and still only really eats soft food with very little interest in finger/BLW foods.

We had a slow start to weaning as he wasn’t interested, which we thought was due to the amount of allergic reactions he was having. He is low percentile so I just concentrated on what I could get in him, which was limited as he is allergic to milk, soya, eggs, wheat and peanuts. He will eat fruit and crisps okay himself but anything else he tends to put in his mouth and then just drop it.

He tends to eat the same thing all the time too but I don’t know how to get him eating finger foods. My other son ate me out of house and home from weaning!!

Just keep trying. There isn't really much else you can do. He won't be being spoon fed puree at 18 years old! He will grow out of it. Just give it time and patience. Offer finger foods first, when he's most hungry so he'd more likely to engage with them.

My first was still on smooth purées at 12 months. It turned out he had Tongue Tie. Does your LO have any of these symptoms?

And have they had their 12 month check yet? Smile

No tongue tie here. He is actually starting to take to things now, I think he is just a slow starter. He hates bread too but there’s only one type he ca have at the moment, so I wonder if he just isn’t keen on that.

Sounds like good news on both counts!

Is there a reason that he's only allowed one type of bread?

I would, as much as possible, give him exactly what you have, and included increasingly less mashed food in that. As you’re eating it occasionally talk about how it’s crunchy or soft or juicy etc and how to bite it. But don’t go overboard, keep it lighthearted and low pressure.

Yes, he is allergic to gluten and egg. Most gluten free bread has egg in and there’s only one available that’s free from both in shops near me (small town with small shops)

That sounds like an absolute pain and I suppose there’s every chance that he might not like it. Ive never been a huge fan of bread at all.

How are you both getting in now? Flowers
