Sorry if this is long winded but can anyone help.
I am having huge a problem getting my 13 mth old DD to drink any water/juice at all. She has been badly constipated for the last week and the doctor prescribed a micro enema and lactulose and told us to push fluids. We cannot get her to drink anything and what does go in she immediately spits out....I am only breast feeding last thing at night as am back to work...today she has refused all water and milk, and is now having trouble passing poo, I am so worried....any ideas?

do you leave her beaker around whereever you are
I find that if I have a drink at the same time dd follows my example

TrinityTheProgressingRhino · 21/05/2008 20:15

offer her some juice....

posieflump · 21/05/2008 20:16

I think she laready does TR

TrinityTheProgressingRhino · 21/05/2008 20:16

sorry I see now that you havwe tried juice
I wasn't being flippant I was woorried I was going to get jumped on for suggesting juice

I find that gecko likes some cups more than others and will copy me

so make sure someone drinks ALOT around her and try a new cup perhaps

katpotat · 21/05/2008 20:21

We have tried every cup under the sun, I could sell them have tried leaving beaker around the house for her to help herself....it's almost like she is never thirsty. We drink loads around her .....we are never out of the loo...Should I go back to the doctor?

Have you tried just offering her some water out of your own cup (make sure it's not one that'll break if she bites down on it, obviously)? DS often refuses his own cup but for some reason water tastes better out of Mum's glass

Try it at different temperatures. Warm water is pretty good for getting things moving too. And warm apple juice (I give 10% juice to 90% water at this age).

My DD isn't very good at cold milk, but likes cold water.

Giving it from your own cup is a very good idea.

My DS is 13 months and i had the same problem until ii bought the little jars in boots of Hipp Organic Mineral Water with a hint of apple juice and out it in the tommee tippee free frow cup with the 2 holed spout that flips up and down and he drinks loads now.

Pinkjenny · 22/05/2008 15:33

I know this is going to sound stupid, but we had this problem with my 12mo. She was a nightmare, and then all of a sudden she just started drinking out of her cup. I always leave her cup wherever she is playing, and she can just pick it up and drink from it.

We even resorted to pretending we were drinking a glass of water because invariably she'd come and want some. That was the only way we could get fluids down her during the day. But recently, and really only the last few weeks, she has just started drinking from her cup.

Thank for all the ideas, we are going to keep trying
She is just a stubborn wee devil

Try a box of juice (eve the dreaded ribena ) with a straw - and squeeze the box slightly with the straw in her mouth.

Make a great fuss about your glass of water - and let her sip from the side.

Sports bottles of water?

Ice cream is a great laxative!

I've had to get my DD of the same age to drink more water recently (she was hospitalised last month with a kidney infection, so all the more reason) and found it very hard, but we've got there now, I think. It was essentially behaviour that she had to learn (I may be wrong, but I think babies - and adults - often don't recognise thirst signals).

What worked best was sitting her in her highchair with some dry bread or biscuits. That would get her drinking, and now she has a stronger mealtimes/water association. Trying to get her to drink when she was playing didn't work too well. (Although giving dollies water helped, I think).

If she stays on strike much longer, though, I'd take her back to the doctor to check for dehydration. It's infuriating - they tell you to 'push fluids' and 'you'll just have to try,' but give you no ideas as to how.

Katpotat-My ds2 is exactly the same.He is 13 months old and has been using a cup from around 6 months old,but never drinks the water. He spits every mouthful out, soaks himself and has had upto 4 changes of clothes, just because he is wet.
Can't offer any advice but will be interested to see if anyone else has some other ideas.
I think I might start offering juice instead of water and see if that makes a difference, although knowing him,he'll probably spit that out too.
