I wont listen to the health visitor at the weigh in clinic who says I have missed the window of opportunity by not weaning DD at 4.5mo. She also seems to think BLW is dangerous.

I think Bollaux to her I will ask MN.

i think that the gist is that beyond 6 months you're good to go with no family history of allergies. the introduction of one food at a time stuff seems to owe its existence to weaning at 4ish months.

Cool, thanks!
I think he'll enjoy it more with different colours and flavours, and I reckon I'll be able to tell more what he prefers. He wolfed down the broccoli but was unkeen on corgette, but since they were different days it could have just been he felt different iyswim, rather than actually liked one more than the other.

Ohh, exciting times!

we all have our pasts...

now, make like i never told you nuttin', y'hear?

GoodGollyMissMolly · 23/05/2008 18:54

lol at 'now, make like i never told you nuttin', y'hear?'

Well all seems to be going well, DD loves avacado (SP?) I didn't think she would, but she eats it like theres no tomorrow.

I just have a couple of questions.

  1. Can you give egg to a 6 mo?

  2. WARNING TMI I seem to be finding full bits of food in DD's ...erm... number two's . Is this normal as it looks just like undigested food.

Also if anyone can give me some more ideas for finger food I would appreciate it.

TIA

Hello Miss Molly, sounds like you are well on your way, nice one! Don't be surprised though if your dd seems to suck and chew everything with gusto this week but then the next is not interested, its quite normal and don't panic. Just continue offering bits of food when you wish and see what happens, its so much more fun than pureeing and spooning concoctions in to your little ones mouth!

In answer to your questions, I gave ds cooked egg from 6 months but he doesnt particularly like it! He's 15mths now and will sometimes eat egg mayo at nursery. I think the usual allergy rules apply, try it, keep an eye on it etc. re the food in nappy thing, this is totally normal, some foods will go straight through like raisins, leeks, sweetcorn, beans but its not a problem.

Re finger food, I found the easiest things at first to be brocolli, cooked and cooled potatoes, toast, pitta, softened shreddies/ mini weetabix at breakfast (softened with a splash of milk/ emb/ formula whatever you choose), cucmber slices. To be honest, anything that ds wouldnt choke on but could mess with as that's all he did for the first few months. Don't get too hung up on it, relax, give her something off your plate you think is suitable, share, its much easier this way. And remember "food is for fun until they are one!" so it doesnt matter if she is not eating much for the first months of weaning, its not important as long as she is getting her milk she will be fine.

Eventually you will see she starts to eat more and drink less, its not a forced or conscious issue by you, it just happens!

Sorry to witter on, its just that for the first few weeks of BLW'ing ds I was so obsessed with whether I was doing the right thing that I forgot the basics of BLW, about how stress free it should be and then as soon as I relaxed with it, it came much more naturally and easily!

Good luck!

GoodGollyMissMolly · 24/05/2008 13:35

Thanks jojo, DH and I are really enjoying BLW, as is DD and so are the dogs, they are getting lots of treats and snacks off the floor!!

I'm going to try DD with a hard boiled egg sliced up.

Eggs are fine if they're cooked properly - no runny yolks. Tink used to love eggy bread.

About allergies, it's been reported (anecdotally of course, so don't take it as gospel) that given the opportunity babies will reject foods they're allergic to. Story on the Yahoo Group of someone who's LO refused egg. Daddy, unconvinced of the wonders of BLW decided to spoon the egg in. They ended up at hospital with anaphylactic shock. Gill Rapley's mentioned being told it happens and you often hear it from people in places where BLW has been spoken about. I haven't heard from anyone who's LO ate something willingly that they were allergic to so don't know if it happens. Please still go with care because it hasn't and can't be proven.

I have a directors chair (dictators chair as it got called on Aitch's site) highchair that I can take the seat and back off of to throw in the wash. It hasn't got a tray - hippo mat is great to use at the table in the messy days - and the wooden arms are quite easy to clean. I brought it home from Majorca, but they'd be easy enough to make (if you are handy with a needle or know someone who is) as it's just a normal directors chair with narrower back and seat.

Sounds like you are doing really well. You will find as you go along that things become obvious, you see what they can do and it makes you think about other things they could manage or you work out how to give things so it can be eaten as finger food (curry mixed equally with rice is really easy). Aitch's site is great, I used to browse it on WAP when I didn't have the internet!

I can heartily recommend asparagus (English if you can still get it now). Steamed in MW for 4 mins, slathered in unsalted butter, 3-4 or so for baby, the rest for you...

Butternut squash, roasted whole then cut into fat chip shapes... share as above!

GoodGollyMissMolly · 25/05/2008 10:15

Thanks TBM, DD did have a bit of the egg and she doesn't seem to have had an allergy to it so I think all is well on that front.

TBH I now just sit DD on the floor on a clean tarpaulin and put her food on a tray in front of her. It is so much easier to clean. Any left overs are usually put in the dogs bowls so I'm not getting a lot of waste.

Thanks WS, I love asparagus will try DD with some over the weekend.

I have another question;

  1. how did your dc sleep after you started BLW. DD has slept through the night from 6 weeks old and now she is waking 3-4 times a night. DH and I are exhausted.

TIA
