Marmite...

is marmite okay in teensy doses? I know it is high in salt, but a thin scrape is surely not enough to harm?

DS loved it on rice cakes for lunch

What age?

I wouldn't give it at all to an under one year old, and even over one I would give it only occasionally (ie not every day).

It's also got lots of vitamins and folic acid so isn't all bad!

TheMelodyMaker · 19/05/2008 16:13

Oh god, he's 7 months. It was 3 rice cakes, he probably ate two, but mushed the other one over his face/head/the world.

Everything else is home made so no other salt, ever.

Oh don't panic, I doubt it's caused any harm! LOL at the mushing. Thank god my dining room wall has washable paint on the walls!

It is just rather salt laden so best avoided I think for young kidneys. Remember as well that even if you don't add salt to any other home-made food it is present in many foods already that you might be offering, eg bread, baked beans, breakfast cereals.

my 8mo has marmite on toast a couple of times a week and also a couple of the marmite rice cakes. but then he will eat anything.

Tinkjon · 23/05/2008 23:06

Personally I wouldn't give it to under 1s either.

Tommy · 23/05/2008 23:07

mine have all had it before 1 - it's not as if you spread it on like jam is it?

wrinklytum · 23/05/2008 23:09

I gave it to mine on toast, thin scraping.Under 1.They are still around to tell the tale

wasabipeanut · 23/05/2008 23:11

My 8mo was given a marmite sandwich at nursery the other day and really liked it. I freaked a bit about the salt content but he doesn't have any other salt.

Given that I more or less lived off marmite for the first 4 months of pregnancy I guess it isn't entirely surprising.

Marmite salt info

GerrardWinstanley · 23/05/2008 23:17

i gave it to my dd from about 7mo

it's perfectly ok occassionally and in small quantities as part of a generally low salt diet.

If he likes marmite then he'll probably love other strong falvours like sardines on toast (low in salt and high in omega 3s).

I've also found marmite very useful for getting DD to eat something when she has a cold. The flavour is strong enough to beat a bunged up nose.

nelliesmum · 23/05/2008 23:25

Hey, I was the first woman ever to work in the marmite factory (extract plant), unless they've changed it the specification was 15-17% salt...so it is high, only a scraping won't hurt though, ds loves it.

Melfish · 25/05/2008 16:12

My mum told me they used to give free pots of marmite to women at the baby clinic in the 70s (not sure if it was for the mums or the babies!).

chloemegjess · 25/05/2008 16:48

I think it is finee as part of a low salt diet. Just give a small portion. We used to give to babies at the nursery I used to work at. Just no more than say once a week and only spread a tiny bit on

missmama · 25/05/2008 16:57

When I had my eldest (10 yesterday) we had a pot of marmite in the Emmas diary weaning pack.
