What can you/can't you freeze - baby puree wise?

Hello. I have been making purees for my DD and I have been frozen carrot and butternut, but wondering what else I can freeze? Are there any fruits/veges that I can't freeze?

I have 2 mangos in my kitchen, was going to have some myself and puree some for my DD. Can I freeze this once pureed? Also, is there an age guideance for mango?

I was very surprised to learn you could freeze pureed melon.
I would imagine mango will be fine, if it doesn't freeze it will just be that the texture will be odd when defrosted, doubt it could be harmful. Mango will be fine for you DC, age wise!

whomovedmychocolate · 15/05/2008 15:56

not sure on mango but you can't freeze banana, courgette, melon, peach, grapes etc.

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2008 15:56

have you tried giving her a slice of mango? My DS loves it - which reminds me, we have one going mushy in the fruit bowl

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2008 15:56

wmmc - I would have said you could freeze all of those, with the exception of grapes. Is there any reason why you can't?

lailasmum · 15/05/2008 15:58

Potatoes are truly vile when they have been frozen and defrosted. Sweet potato is fine though

chloemegjess · 15/05/2008 16:30

thanks, just tried to do it but the mango isn't nice anyway, must have picked 2 bad ones which is a shame. so didnt bother.

would still like to know about freezing in general though as I plan to do anything and everything!

there are loads of baby food books around, try your local library would be my suggestion.

Mango is great pureed and frozen- I still do it sometimes now, as it is delicious over ice cream or on natural yoghurt. There is no age restriction AFAIK- its not like citrus fruits.
The only things you really can't freeze are mushrooms, bananas, cherries (?) and potatoes. Not sure about citrus stuff either.
I successfully did peas, courgette, sweet potato, carrot, swede, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, apple, (each)peach, pear, plum, blueberries, etc loads of stuff (twas pfb).

I bought the Annabell karmel book about weaning and it tells you what you can and can't freeze. from what I can remember it's banana, advocado and papaya you can't freeze

OverMyDeadBody · 15/05/2008 22:58

Ok I do this for a living (make frozen babyfood) - banana's not good for freezing, but it canbe done mixed with other stuff (like banana and rice). Cooked mashed potato can be frozen fine, especially mixed in with other stuff as a babyfood. Haddock, potato and pea is a firm favourite here.

Courgette, again, can be frozen just fine, as can mango. I make a delicious mango, pear and millet pudding.

Avocado - don't bother freezing it.

Grapes are great frozen whole and then eaten whole and frozen, but obviously not suitable for babies unless you cut them up and supervise (obviously).

For things like mushrooms, it really does depend on what they are in, raw on their own might not work, but in a cooked risotto for example, and haeted up properly, they will be fine.

We freeze chunks of raw veg to then use in cooking too. It works fine for most veg that is then going to be cooked up and pureed.

I don't think that tofu can be frozen (when in foods, on the packet it says you can freeze it). All of the recipes I've seen (in the AK book, and a Carol Timperley one of veggie recipes) don't say you can freeze them which is a bit annoying.

That's good to know about mashed potato, OverMyDeadBody, I was going to cook up a big batch and freeze it to mix with other things.

chloemegjess · 16/05/2008 11:35

overmydeadbody - that was really helpful, thank you.

I would love to make and sell frozen baby food. I thought of it a while ago and would love to do it, but I didnt think it actually existed! Do you know where I can find more info about doing this? I love making baby food and love the idea of being able to make fresh foods for the babies who currently dont get it because of busy, working parents. I am hoping to work from home instead of going back to work. Childminding is going to be my main job, but would love to do this as well!! Sorry, i dont want to sound like I am trying to steal your buissness, but I assume we are in different areas anyway and it is sold locally?
