DS2 is just over 5.5 months and I have just started weaning him. He is tongue tied and although this hasn't casued him any problems with breast feeding i don't really know what to expect when it comes to solids. Can others with a tongue tied baby please tell me their expereinces and what to expect.

thanks

DD1 is tongue tied. It didn't stop her bf nor did it cause problems with weaning. Just give it a go and if you do encounter any problems get in touch with the HV, but you should be fine, epecially if baby is bf normally.

ah thats good to know. How old is your DD1, does she have any problems with her speech? I'm just wondering if becasue DS2 bf's well he has uite a good range of movement and therefore speech will be ok

DD1 does have problems with her speech but please don't worry because it's certainly not related to her tongue tied. She is 3 and has got various development delays, none of which spot her eating like a horse though

ok, thanks very much

Both my DC1 and 2 were tongue tied DC2 was worse and had a fork at lip level, iykwim. He had no problems eating at all, but they both had tongue tie removed before their first birthday as a leading consultant said that once specch starts it's difficult to undo bad word forming. Never looked back.

ds' tie didn't affect weaning at all

Posie - does it depend on where you live as to what sort of treatment you are offered. I didn't notice DS2 tongue tie until he was 9 wks old (he never really cried!!) and i went to see my GP as HV was very vague but GP said that it was unlikely he would have it snipped unless it caused alot of problems. I am worried (prematurely i know) that he will have problems with speech and months/years of speech therapy .

Get referred to paediatric ENT consultant and see what they say. My oldest dc was seen at 16 weeks and operated at 10 months. I insisted and told my GP that I would visit him once a week until we were referred, I also called the consultants secretary and was very very nice to her!!! I think my approach is called the squeaky wheel approach!!

My son was tongue tied and it was noticed by the MW because he was losing weight and not BFing properly. We were referred to the BF clinic at the hospital at which my son was born and then referred to Mr Griffiths at Southampton hospital to have it snipped.

He was only 12 days old when it was done and he didn't even wake up for the procedure It certainly didn't hurt him although I appreciate that the older the baby is the more this would become a possibility.

He regained the 1.2Kgs he had lost over the next 4 weeks and had reached birth weight again by 7 weeks. I'm pleased I had it snipped. My son is now 27 weeks, happy and healthly and starting to take solid food

sorry, that should have been 0.8Kgs - my lbs to Kgs conversion brain is on strike this morning
