is it not ok to feed salmon to a baby???? Ds has had salmon since a year old

Stefka · 13/05/2008 20:39

I have no clue that is why I am asking! My DS is six and a half months old and I was thinking of making some kind of salmon puree for him to try.

dd had salmon at about 7 months old

Hulababy · 13/05/2008 20:43

I think fish can be given after 6 months.

mawbroon · 13/05/2008 20:52

If you are doing cautious weaning because of a family history of allergies, then you should hold off until after a year. Otherwise, then anytime I guess, if you have started weaning at 6 months.

I presume that you are talking about normal salmon, not smoked?

Stefka · 13/05/2008 20:57

Yes just normal salmon. No allergies so I will give it a go!

I was wondering about smoked salmon actually. DD (5yo) loves it but wondering when I can give it to my 8mo DS. Is smoked food considered thoroughly cooked?

Heathcliffscathy · 13/05/2008 22:31

any farmed salmon including organic isn't fine. ever. especiallly for children.

next mad cow.

toxic.

laugh if you like. and then go and do some reading.

Stefka · 14/05/2008 09:08

Can you give us some links on that? Is it bad for children or for adults too?

farmed salmon are fed other fish and are kept in appalling environments and are infested with sealice. www.vegansociety.com/html/animals/exploitation/fish.php

sleepdeprivationandme · 14/05/2008 14:59

Ds2 from 7 months.

I am sure not all salmon farms are infested. Just as you would purchase meat/poultry/ other fish from somewhere you trust when feeding yourselves and your little ones.

I know which local farms our meat comes from. Dc's love a good meat/fish up. You dont need to give them kilos of the stuff - Its all about different tastes with the babies

Tinkjon · 14/05/2008 16:14

Re. the sea lice - would they actually do any harm if eaten though? I think proper cooking would prevent it being an issue. Just like raw chicken has bad bacteria in it which you wouldn't want to eat but as soon as you cook it it's fine. I'm not saying it wouldn't be icky of course , just querying that it's actually bad for you.

Stefka · 14/05/2008 16:39

ugh this thread is starting to make me feel sick. My DH and I eat salmon once a week - I never really thought about where it was from. I will be getting wild salmon from now on.

OP posts:
mmelody · 14/05/2008 16:47

Well I don't know if the sea lice would be bad for you exactly but I would rather eat a healthy wild salmon than one kept in those conditions.. Salmon is rapidly becoming the 'chicken' of the sea and is causing absolute havoc to the ecosytems because of the pollution generated from the farms.
I am pretty sure that where there are high stock levels of fish, a tiny amount of space and an artificial diet.. then parasites will be present..

Stefka you get what you pay for

Stefka · 14/05/2008 16:53

I just got mine from Tesco.

vesela · 24/05/2008 22:39

My DD is 14 months and hasn't had salmon yet because we can't get organic/wild salmon here (in the Czech Republic).

So I take fish oil supplements (I'm BFing), only I keep forgetting to take them, and I won't be BFing that much longer.

Tuna = mercury

Tinned sardines = lots of salt (or that's what it tastes like).

Any other ideas for oily fish?

Makerel

seeker · 25/05/2008 08:36

My two loved kippers from a very early age. You can get undyed ones. Probably not the best thing for them, but better than a chicken nugget! [seeker reassure herself]
