DS is 6mhts this week and is mostly breastfed (has a bottle of formula for night feed). All the books etc say I should give him his first solids at the 11am feed but DS feeding times are not that regular. And the past couple of days he;s been feeding much more too. Sometimes he can go 3 hours bet feeds and at others only an hour and a half. But if we're out and about he can go 4.5 hours. So what do you fabulous mums suggest? Should I just offer him solids at 11ish each day whether he's recently had a bf or not? Or something else?

My DS has irregular feeds as well - I started him on solids on Monday, and time it within a couple of hours either way of midday. I make sure it's about an hour to an hour and a half after his last feed, and just go with the flow.

Hi Naetha - thanks for your reply. How are you going about the weaning? Are you giving baby rice, puree of BLW? I'm wondering also if we're supposed to give water too?

My DD is 4 mths old and her feeding is erratic too. Like smilings, she can go up to 4 hrs or as little as 1.5 hrs. Argh!!
she has also been waking up every 2 hrs or so at night for the past few weeks. She used to sleep 10 til 4.30.
I was giving her rice but she didn't like it so much, the hipp one, so i got porridge, creamy and apple & banana, she doesn't mind those but prefers 1/4 of rusk with some cooled boiled water.
I give it between 9 and 10 if she's interested, if not then about 12, then again for tea 6-7pm.
Told hv about it and she said a bit of rusk/porridge isn't going to hurt her.
How can i get her to sleep for longer?????

Apologies for long post if you got this far.

Hello Imawuzel. My baby started waking all the time when he hit four months too. HV also suggested weaning when I told her, but four months is pretty early. I've spoken to other mums and it seems that the general consensus is that babies often do this (i.e. stop sleeping through at 4 MO), and that weaning doesn't actually stop this from happening. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! There's not much to be done but sit it out, I'm afraid.

On a different note, isn't rusk made of wheat? I thought we were supposed to hold off feeding wheat to begin with because of the allergy thing. If it seems to you she's not taking much of an interest it might be a good indication she's not really ready yet. Is there any way you can hold off for a bit longer?

late reply but better late than never.
She does like the rusk but doesn't cry out for it. If she doen't want it she spits it out.
Didn't think about the wheat.I stopped eating nuts and still have because i normally have hayfever, but not this year or last.
Some friends have said maybe it's a growth spurt.
she slept good last night but that was only because she had her 3 jabs yesterday i guess.
When she was weighed last at 9 wks she was 10lb, and 7 weeks on she's 13lb, hv reckoned she might have been well under if i hadn't been giving her a bit of rusk/porridge.
I might stop it for a few days to a week and see what happens.
Just means i'll have to feed her every 2 hours throughout the day and night.
parenting huh.

HV are a funny breed. It seems to be they say to wean if you've got a small baby, wean if you've got a big baby, wean if your baby can sit up - all flying in the face of the WHO guidance of wait until 6 months! It's a minefield.

Good luck with the sleep tonight.

Personally, regarding the sleep, there's no harm in trying. For some babies the 4 month wakefullness isn't to do with food. In my DS's case it seemed to have been as he has been on solids a week now, and we've had a week of good sleeps - going from waking up to 20 times a night, to just the one last night.
