Baby Led Weaning

I know all guidelines say to wait till 6 months but DD (4 months on Wednesday) is always starving. She drinks 9oz of milk and is hungry afterwards. If I make another bottle which I have done before now she carries on and drinks another 5/6oz of that one.

I made up a very weak set of babyrice for her (looked like slightly lumpy milk ..... lol) gave her a spoonful and then watched her face she seemed to eat pretty much all the first spoon so I left it at that but she started reaching out for the spoon, I put a little bit on the spoon and gave it to her she put it straight in her mouth (again looking like she'd eaten most of it)

I then gave her the spoon with nothing on it incase she just wanted the spoon, she put it in her mouth then almost threw it at me (my DD not dull.... lol) She did this for a few days and then suddenly doesn't want the babyrice anymore but is still wanting more and more milk.

Is that classed as BLW should I carry on (with something else) or is there a better way to help her not be soooo hungry?

She used to have a sicky problem where it seemed like almost most of her bottle came up after she'd had it. I initially thought that was why she was always hungry but We've managed to stop that and she's still eating the same amount as when she was sicky.

I'm really torn cos I know weaning early can be bad but surely if she's doing it herself then she's ready?
Also if I should be carrying on is there something else I can give her that's filling but not too tough on her belly?

Sorry this is long and I hope it makes sense.

Cheers welliemum - I'll try the milk then but I think I will allow her to have a spoonful or so of the other stuff seeing as she seems to enjoy shoving something in her mouth but I will stick to just 1 or 2 spoonfulls for now and see what happens.

Does anyone know of any bottles that hold more than 9oz of milk or will I just have to endure her screaming while I switch bottles? lol

OP posts:
PussinJimmyChoos · 04/05/2008 23:36

Just make up 1 normal bottle and one with about 4oz at the same time, if she wants more, then its to hand right away - means more bottles to wash but its better than having a screaming baby! lol

I'm a big fan of a small amount of farleys (reduced sugar obv!) in the evening before bed BUT I realise that I'm very much in the minority with that!

LuckySalem · 04/05/2008 23:38

She eats farleys milk so maybe farleys would be the best to start her on. If it's not going to harm her stomach then I don't mind giving her something different to taste but during the day i'll just make her more milk till she's full. I just hope she doesn't take this to mean she should keep asking for more and more and more and more!! lol... I'm sure she wouldn't!

Right all i'm going to bed, cheers for all the thoughts in the meantime and if someone has any other ideas please let me know I really am grateful.

dd2 devoured a croissant as her first food

LuckySalem · 05/05/2008 15:16

Ok so I tried what you suggested Welliesmum, I gave her her normal bottle (9oz) then made her another 9oz bottle which she drank 6oz of. So she's just drank 15oz's

I've also bought her a pear today which I'm gonna go steam for her to have later tonight. I don't have to add anything to it do i? Just steam the pear mush it and sorted.

PussinJimmyChoos · 05/05/2008 17:10

Lucky - really does sound as if she is hungry for food rather than milk imo. I'd steam the pear, mush it up and then try it mixed with a little baby rice to dilute it a bit. She may not like it right away though - it is trial and error when they start purees. Good luck!

LuckySalem · 05/05/2008 17:14

Cheers PSC!! I'm making it for tea, Is in the steamer at the moment.

OP posts:
LuckySalem · 05/05/2008 18:40

Ok so i'm stupid!
I put half the pear in steamer cut in little pieces cos it looked like there was too much for a whole one. Then when it was steamed I took it out and mushed a piece and realised - D'uh, I should have peeled it first, then double D'uh half a pear mushed is buggar all!!!

OP posts:
OverMyDeadBody · 05/05/2008 19:04

lol

Yep you need to peel it first. For older babies it would be fine pureed with the skin but at 4 months that would be just a bit too much roughage for her system to handle.

One pear will give you about 100g of pureed mush, she's unlikely to eat even half of that in one go at her age but it's worth cooking a whole lot at once and freezing most of it in ice cube trays so save you cooking up tiny amounts each time you want to feed her.

You could also try a little carrot pureed in with the pear next time, and then a bit of cooked normal rice (not that tasteless babyrice gloop) pureed in with the pear and carrot.

Good luck!

LuckySalem · 05/05/2008 21:34

Well I mixed it with baby rice and she ate a bowlfull of that (around about 4 baby spoons of it) then her 9oz bottle and then screamed at me when it ran out. I had to distract her, the amount she's eating is just wrong.

She did like the pear though, was quite funny watching her face, she looked at me as if to say "where did this come from" was so funny. If I wasn't quick enough getting the spoon to her mouth she'd squeal at me.... looks like I have a patient one!

Ah, now you see I had a different take on this: when mine were hungry I just gave them more and more milk - however much that was - until they weren't hungry any more!

But I'm glad you've got something that works for you.

LuckySalem · 05/05/2008 23:56

Am I not overfeeding her though or is there no way you can do this with babies?
I keep thinking of the maury show where the 3 year old was really heavy!

OP posts:
welliemum · 06/05/2008 00:12

I think that as long as you stop when they want to stop, it would be hard to overfeed a baby. I think that's true both of milk and solids.

LuckySalem · 06/05/2008 00:15

Ok cheers wellie - i'll try it again tomorrow. I don't mind her drinking that amount of milk (although she is REALLY slow, lol) I just worry it's not good for her.

OP posts:
LuckySalem · 06/05/2008 00:16

Just realised I'm a huge worrywort!

OP posts:
welliemum · 06/05/2008 00:26

I think it's called "being a mum", LS. Good luck!

PussinJimmyChoos · 06/05/2008 09:42

Lucky - sounds like she enjoyed what you made her - bless. Babies are very good at stopping when they are full so don't worry about over feeding her and it is possible for a baby to be ready for more than milk at the age she is now. Its only in the last few years that the weaning age has changed from 4mths to 6months and as I always say - the babies don't read the guidelines!!! lol

You are doing just fine - keep listening to your instincts and enjoy watching your baby enjoy her food! Wait until it starts getting flung around the dining room!

LuckySalem · 06/05/2008 22:01

Oh I'm so confused! Went to babyclub today where they weighed her and have been told by the HV that shes eating too much and I should be cutting down her feeds - She's put on 2lbs in 4 weeks!

OP posts:
PussinJimmyChoos · 06/05/2008 22:59

I would ignore the health visitor.

Your DD is obviously hungry and when you get the balance right between puree and milk, then it should level off again and be more slow and steady.

Also, she's around 4mths so she's probably just going through a growth spurt. My DS was very chubby in the face before he started walking - in fact his nick name (not started by me I add!) was Chunk as he looked like the fat kid in the Goonies!!! lol As soon as he started crawling and then walking, he thinned out. A bit of extra flesh always good imo as when they start teething and go off their foods, they have some stores as it were!

I think DS only got weighed at his compulsory check ups....never bothered in between that as HV just stress you out imo!

kittywise · 07/05/2008 19:19

Take NO notice of the health visitor. Like most of them she does have a clue what she is talking about!!! A little bit of baby rice isn't putting on the weight, it's your milk!!!!

kittywise · 07/05/2008 19:20

Sorry, meant her milk!

Lulumama · 07/05/2008 19:25

cut out the food !! give her milk, lots of it, use hungry baby milk if necessary, and ride out the growth spurt. a spoon of food is not going to put any weight on, the milk is!

Liz79 · 08/05/2008 15:19

minkyborage when you say your dc devoured a croissant as his first food, do you mean the first non-milk food he was offered was a croissant and that he ate all of it? When? the day he was 6mo? I want to do blw was thinking of offering toast for breakfast on 6m birthday. Can I do it sitting in bed? How much toast? With crusts? Unsalted butter?
