you can use cow's milk in cooking after 6mo
I always do with dd as I don't have formula in the house and I;m buggered if I'm wasting ebm in porridge!

I would stay away from dairy at that age, think that is recommended alot these days. You can use rice milk with calcium. Don´t know about formula.

I always use cows milk in cooking. Have done since DD was 6 months.

is it unsafe to use formula in cooking (porridge)? i just don't know how to handle the stuff and i'm very worried i'll make him ill by mis-using it...

at avoiding dairy after 6m
only if you have an allergicky baby

it's not unsafe to cook with formula, not in the slightest.
just make it up according to the directions on the tin (ie with hot water) and use it like normal milk.

thanks Mrs B!

higher risks of allergy before 12 months. Also cows milk does increase in my kids snot, so colds are worse and ear infections. it seems to have been worse since they are not on higher levels of other non dairy milk.

I always used cow's milk to cook with once my son was 6 mths old.

MrsBadger · 01/05/2008 09:47

your call
the risks in the kellymom link are mostly associated with giving cows' milk as a drink supplemental to bfing, not with giving milk-containing solids.

porridge uses alot of milk if cooked with it. the protein is supposed to be harder to digest. Baby formula cow milk is changed to be easier.

see how your baby takes to it, but if your baby gets congested easily try non dairy options as it can really help.

MrsBadger · 01/05/2008 10:54

or just make the damn stuff up with water

ShowOfHands · 01/05/2008 10:57

I make porridge with half milk, half water anyway as it's cheaper (scrooge) and tastes the same.

DD's had it with cows' milk since 6mo.
