Mushrooms (and divorce)

please can anyone tell me whether it is ok to give an 8 month old mushrooms (not wild ones, just ordinary field mushrooms bought from a shop)?

Me and DH are in disagreement over it! I seem to think caution was advised, but have no reason why excpet perhaps because it's a fungus? DH says he'd think mushrooms were far healthier for dd than the olives she shares with me at lunch

can you help my marriage?!

i'm sure both my wee ones would have had mushrooms in things around this age

don't think i ever did it on its own as a "weaning food" IYKWIM

I think caution is advised with raw mushrooms IIRC but cooked is fine.

thanks!! i shall tell dh we are both right - and then make up

mushrooms are fine, but pretty 'empty' nutritionally, they're only eaten for their flavour. Olives have far more in them nutritionally

meep · 28/04/2008 20:43

my dd is partial to a chicken, mushroon and prune dish! Mushrooms are fine!

Scrub the compost off first but yes they are fine. Actually mushrooms can be a great way of getting fat into a child who won't eat - they soak it up.

Brangelina · 28/04/2008 20:54

At that age they're fine only should be cooked, not least to avoid things like e.coli (although unlikely from most commercial mushrooms). They can also pose an allergy risk but if you're not an allergic family then that's also unlikely.

Mushrooms are not empty nutritionally, they're actually packed full of B vitamins and minerals such as selenium - here's some nutritional info - which is why I give them to my DD quite a lot. They're also a really handy filler for a lot of sauces and other dishes.

I am not sure what age a child can have them but shitake mushrooms are good for fighting cancer properties.

OverMyDeadBody · 28/04/2008 21:22

Compared with other food, they are pretty empty nutritionally.
