Rash after yoghurt

Baby is just over 6 months and we are currently weaning. He came up in a rash today after eating some plain yoghurt. He’s had yoghurt about 3-4 times before with no rash. It went down after about 20 minutes with no other symptoms. He is breastfed and also has had bottles of formula before. Has eaten toast with a little butter with no rash but otherwise hasn’t had any other diary. Not sure what the issue is and feeling worried about dairy etc now. We haven’t tried eggs yet either…
Any advice?

Next time you give yoghirt I'd just make sure it's in the morning and when your GP is open.

How are they now? I have CMPA and get very uncomfortable and miserable.

Do they have eczema / sensitive skin? My LO does have some allergies but her skin is so so sensitive that some foods just trigger rash / a couple of hives where the food touches.

the fact your LO has had formula no problem implies it’s not an allergy, although allergies can form at any time. Just give a small amount next time to be sure but it’s probably just a skin reaction.

One more thing, are you using baby wipes to clean them up after they've eaten?

He is fine, was fine during and done after and the rash went down after about 15-20 minutes.
Yes I used baby wipes to clean him up also.

He has little dry patches but not eczema. I am wondering about the sensitive skin bit, my MIL said my husband came up in a rash all the time when he was eating as a baby but didn’t have any allergies in the traditional sense.
Thats what I thought re CMPA as he had had formula quite a few times even though he is mainly BF.
Will try a small amount next thanks!

DD’s face goes a bit blotchy if I use a disposable wipe on her - maybe next time just try a flannel/cloth with some warm water on and see what happens?

It can take several exposures for a reaction to develop but if formula is ok then I’d be surprised if yoghurt isn’t. Having said that, my daughter is 20 months and would happily eat a large pot of yoghurt and entire block of cheese if we let her, but give her milk to drink and she’s violently sick.

Agree it could be the wipes. Have a DF who was driven to distraction trying to work out what was causing her DS' rash and it was the wipes all along Wink

It'll just be a contact rash if there are no other allergy symptoms, was isolated and didn't bother them. Yoghurt is acidic in a way that milk isn't. And contact rashes are very common with acidic foods

DS had this early on with cows milk products. We just waited a little longer and then reintroduced in small amounts. It’s very common early on in weaning but doesn’t always mean that they will have life long problems. By the time DS was 12months he could tolerate milk, cheese and yoghurt.

He was a prem baby so often had reactions to certain proteins. The mystery one for us was latex. I am allergic to latex due to prolonged exposure ( glove wearing at work). DS would often develop weals around his abdomen after a bath. We realised that I probably had latex residue on my hands after working that triggered his reaction when my hand got wet. He also had a reaction to pampers nappies where the elastic touches the waste.

Latex is a common allergen and other related foods can cause problems. I can’t eat bananas for example because they cause burning sensation in my mouth and stomach cramps.
For the same reason, check the yoghurt for other ingredients. Some fruits can be allergens.
DS is now 20, he is a human dustbin but doesn’t like bananas and is careful with plant based foods related to the latex family.

Thanks all - I don’t think it was the wipe as we have used them to clean up after other food mess with no issues.
I think I am going to just take things slowly with diary products and try not to give too many things in one go so I know exactly what is causing the issue.
