How to get baby to drink from a Doidy cup?

I've just started weaning my 6 month old, and I bought him a Doidy cup to use as I heard they were better than spouted beakers.
I've been offering him water after his solid feeds. I hold it for him, and tip it so that the water is touching his lips, but try to avoid actually tipping it in there! He sticks his tongue in it, gargles and generally has a great old time, but I'm not sure if he's actually drinking any.
I'm not too fussed at the moment as he's still on 5 7oz bottles a day, plus I know he's getting more water in food, but I was just wondering what other's experiences of the Doidy were? How long did it take your baby to get the hang of it?

Never did, sorry. She likes it now she's 18 months though.

Keep practising! I'm working on using one with DS (nearly 7m) and I do tip a little liquid in there at a time most dribbles down his chin though He gets really excited now when I bring the cup in which is good because he doesn't really take bottles or sippy cups -- so as long as your ds likes it, does it matter if he's drinking?

(I started later with DD and she was proficient by about 1, although she tended to tip it up onto the floor to check if it was empty )

Sorry, here's a link to explain more about the Doidy

He does love it. He gets all excited when he sees it. I'll keep on with it. I guess when he's thirsty, he'll drink.

We use the tommee tippee first cup which has a lid but doesnt have a valve so it is free-flowing. You can also use it with the lid off so it is just an open cup with handles (bit like the doidy but not slanted and much cheaper)

It took my dd a little while to get used to the doidy cup. Like yours hensmum at first she would just have great fun licking, blowing etc but now she can drink reasonably well from it (with me still holding it). she's 8 mo now and i'd say we saw a massive improvement quite suddenly in the last couple of weeks. she just suddenly seemed to "get it".

SHe also gets really excited by it - ah bless!

yes, keep practising. dd is now 10mo and can lift the cup and drink from it without help. at 6/7 months she often gagged on the water, then learnt to spit it out, not just swallows. has only managed to put it down without spilling twice though we use a doidy and a tommy tippee depending on time of day and where we are i.e. how much it matters if she soaks herself.
