Can I make his porridge thicker?

I bought organix banana porridge for DS but when I make it up with the quantities they describe it just seems like flavoured milk to me. Is it ok to make it up a bit thicker so it has some texture to it do you think or will that be bad for my baby in some way?

How old is he?

MrsBadger · 23/04/2008 09:22

try it and see

if he spits it out in disgust I take no responsibility

(NB you do know that from 6m they can have Readybrek, which has no salt or sugar and is 60000 times cheaper?)

Ah - just worked it out from your due day on your profile!

He should be able to pick things up then? There has been a top porridge weaning trick bandied around for a few years on MN - make up porridge (normal porridge) the night before and set it in the bottom of a bowl overnight. These are "porridge pancakes" and babies across the Mumsnet boards love stuffing them in!
I suppose in answer to your initial question, I would think it wouldn;t hurt, but the flavour might be a bit strong!

Stefka · 23/04/2008 09:28

ohhhh I like the sound of that he much prefers to feed himself anyway. I will also try readybrek! I don't know why I thought I needed special baby food!

oh if he prefers to feed himself then just give him toast and stuff

breakfast is a horrid time to have to spoon

You are not alone in thinking that babies need their very own marketed brand of hideously expensive food Stefka, trust me
The marketing tries to make sure that you think that it is the only stuff you should give!

winestein · 23/04/2008 09:33

here is the original porridge pancake thread btw

Stefka · 23/04/2008 09:39

Fantastic! I am going to try that tomorrow. I am going to give the stupid boxes of baby food to someone else.

The HV said today that the guidelines are for formula milk and that breast milk is not as thick which is why it was so watery. I made my porridge pancake for tomorrow - I sort of fancy eating it myself!

even cheaper than ready brek, I have used standard porridge oats from 6 months

and i flavour it with a couple of cubes of frozen fruit puree,

this also is a great way to cool it down quickly, if like me you have a little one who never wants to wait for food.

MrsBadger · 23/04/2008 21:16

the main attraction of readybrek is that it doesn't need cooking though - you just stir it up with hot water or milk...
