Milk as main source of nutrition until 1

Hello, HV has recommended we drop a milk feed with DD (almost 8 months) to get her more interested in solids.

I've read on mumsnet the milk should be main form of nutrition until they're 1 but does anyone have a link to the source of that info please?

Thanks very much,
Mooki

bump for someone more knowledgable

(how much/how many milk feeds is she having mooki?)

mooki · 23/04/2008 20:09

No one? Did I ask a stupid question?

It's just I did ask the HV for her advice but I'm a little uncertain about dropping from 4 feeds to 3 in the day as she suggests. I want a little factual back-up if I decide ignore her.

NHS says they should have 500ml of milk until they are one.

Will try to find a link.

No problem

I dunno the official line on this but my DC had something like this at that age

6am wake up-milk
8am breakfast
10.30am milk
12.30pm lunch
2.30pm milk
5pm dinner
7pm bed-milk

I found that by spreading it out like this they were hungry enough at mealtimes to try the food but not so hungry that they just wanted milk iykwim

My2Weegirls · 23/04/2008 20:30

i'd agree with fiodyl

my dd2 - 8.5mo is having (approximate timings)

wake up - milk
7.30 breakfast
9.30 milk
12pm lunch (sometimes followed by milk if she still seems hungry)
3pm milk
5pm dinner
7pm milk

and if up during the night she will take more milk (she's a bit of a milk monster
she takes about 7 ounces at each time

have a search on kellymom.com

tons of stuff on there about it

Mine had about the same as the other two posters' DC. He's 13m now and has pretty much dropped his morning milk and only has a couple of ounces in the afternoon (from a cup). He still has a bottle when he wakes and when he goes to bed but usually only drinks about 5oz. I'll carry on doing that until he decides he doesn't want it. Some days he doesn't eat much at all but because he's drinking it doesn't bother me.

Also - when my DS was 8 months he was hospitalised for a week with bronchiolitis. The hospital weren't remotely interested in getting him to eat solids, just to get his milk intake back up. So I'm afraid I think your HV is talking bolleaux

mooki · 23/04/2008 21:02

Thanks all. I was doing something similar to Fiodyl:

wake up milk
8.30 - breakfast
11 - breastfeed
12.30 - lunch
3pm - breastfeed
5pm - dinner
6.30pm - breastfeed

HV suggested dropping 11am feed and bringing lunch forward to 11.30am. I've tried it for 2 days. I can't say I've noticed a great increase in the amount of solids food DD is eating but on the other hand she hasn't squeaked for milk inbetween times either. And her night sleep has conicidentally been better these last 2 nights so I'm a bit confused.

I'd maybe try offering milk after lunch instead but if I get too close to nap time she falls asleep for 5 mins while feeding and then won't nap.

I'm struggling with this one, too. My dd is 7m and has the same schedule as earlier posters, but usually has only 2oz or so from her 11am bottle, and the same or less from her 3pm bottle. She drinks ok first thing, say about 5oz and I then put about 2oz in her porridge. She has 8oz or so at bedtime and 5oz at 10pm so overall she's at the 20oz minimum, but I don't understand why she won't take the milk during the day rather than at night! FYI if I drop the 10pm feed she wakes around 2-3am for a feed so that doesn't work.

Any thoughts?

Tutter · 24/04/2008 10:56

i've just dropped 9mo ds2's mid-morning milk

he now has:
6am(ish) milk
7:30 breakfast
10:00 snack
11:15 early lunch
2:30 milk
5:00 tea
6:30 milk

hv suggested his mid-morning milk was one bottle too many (he's mahoosive)

MrsBadger · 24/04/2008 11:21

thalia, dd does the same - loves milk at night, can't persuade her to tank up during the day (though partly this is due to her having bottles at nursery which are limited to the amount I can express)

am cosleeping though so it doesn't bother me especially, in fact I'd rather roll over half asleep and do a 3am feed than a 10pm sitting-in-the-nursery one.

dal21 · 24/04/2008 11:27

DS is 7.5 months.

7am - milk
8am - brekkie
12pm - lunch
2 - 2.30pm - milk
5pm - dinner
6.45 - milk

once he drops his morning nap and becomes peckish, will add a snack around 10ish.

fiodyl · 24/04/2008 12:24

Thaliablogs I would try making sure DD really fills up witha big meal at dinner time and move the bedtime milk slightly later if u want to drop the 10pm milk. This sould hopefully mean the waking at 2-3am should move to 4-5am and will gradually get later as she gets older. My DC used to do this(and sometimes still do) and I would let them get into bed with me to have their milk and they usually went back to sleep until we got up at 6am

also I dont think it matters too much if they are not exactly meeting their 20z of milk a day as long as they are having cheese and yoghurt etc as part of their diet

Miaou · 24/04/2008 12:36

Hmm, not sure if this will help. Ds2 is 9 months as of today. He has:

4am - milk
8am - milk and breakfast
11am - milk
1pm - milk and lunch
3pm - milk
5pm - milk and tea
7pm - milk
9pm - milk
11pm - milk
2am - milk

And he's tiny - weighs less than my friend's three month old - eats masses of food too! Just goes to show they are all different I guess.

newdad2 · 29/04/2008 20:22

Hi all. DS is 11 months next week. DW has expressed until recently and we noted that the consistency of the milk has changed from being rather thick and fatty when he was younger to now being watery. Also DS has refused milk quite often when offered. I think he is making up his nutrition through his solid food intake. I am guessing that he probably has half a pint in a 24 hour period but he is eating like a little piggy.
