Help with weaning post tongue tie cut - stressed anxious mom

Hi everyone,
Im looking for advice as I’m full of anxiety and don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
DS is 10 months old, had tongue tie cut at 2 days old. When we started weaning I noticed issues so brought him to nurse and they sent me to speech and language where they diagnosed with tongue tie reattachment. It was quite a severe posterior tongue tie. We went private and had to do lots of physio, switch bottles, get rid of dummy etc. and they cut the tie again.
basically my son is struggling with food so much, even now it’s cut, he’s still not really hungry for meals, only eats a certain Ella’s kitchen pouch and just doesn’t seem to be progressing. He struggles with texture and it’s been months if this with little to no improvement.
I’m an absolute anxious wreck when it comes to meal times when we do finger food, I’m so terrified of choking.
How do I help him get better at eating? We have tried to cut bottles down but some days are better than others. He’s still waking twice a night for bottles ( this is only a recent thing, it was once before).
Has anyone any tips for nice food ideas that aren’t in pouches and that won’t cause me to stress? He just seems to have no appetite!
He’s allergic to peanut and egg so we’re starting egg ladder soon.
I feel like I’m doing a terrible job and that my fears are holding him back.
Any help is appreciated! Thank you all! X

Has he had a dysphagia assessment by community paediatric SALT team?

LittleMsSunny · 05/10/2024 14:41

How many bottles is he having?

At 9months I was told to cut down to 3 bottles and as soon as I decreased the bottles appetite massively improved and they ate much more.

Tongue tie cut at 2 days old, that’s a bit much. I’m fully tongue tied and know there is no problems with eating or drinking with a full tongue tie. Maybe he is getting used to his tongue flapping about inside his mouth instead of it being fixed now, sometimes different takes a while to get used to.

With regards to food, how about home cooked and puréed instead of pouch?

I would go back to Speech and Language, OP. Do you have their contact details? DD2 is under SALT feeding team after a very severe tongue tie and a slow recovery. They have said they won't discharge us until we are all confident that weaning is going well. So hopefully your team would also be able to give you a bit of follow up advice or assessment as well.

If you are in touch with SALT contact them. If not, contact your HV who should be able to help you .

No he hasn’t actually! This is something I could mention, although he doesn’t seem to have the majority of the symptoms. Thanks

He has 5 bottles over 24 hours. Yes we’ve been told to cut down too. Did you just cut to 3 straight away or gradually decrease? I feel when I don’t give him enough milk and offer food he just whines until he gets milk!

Yes it was very early. He was in nicu from birth with suspected sepsis so they did it then and there as he was a patient. No one told me about any after care though.
wow that’s interesting. Yes, I’ve done puréed and it’s the same response. Some days he will take it and others days not. He really can’t handle texture at all. So things like mash he struggled with which is annoying as could be used to bulk things up.
we’re doing toast and melty puffs for texture and he doesn’t mind them but he struggles to eat chew etc and sometimes panics

Wow that’s good to know. I have an app next week so I’ll make sure to bring it up that iM not comfortable yet. How was DD2 after her tongue tie? Are they eating better now?

We are only just starting weaning now! We are aiming to be discharged by Christmas (10months) but they said not to worry if it takes a bit longer. DD2s tongue tie wasn't identified until 8weeks and then she had a lot of problems afterwards. Her tongue used to drift off in the side of her mouth for about six weeks afterwards, which is when SALT got involved. Then we had a paeds review to make sure the cause wasn't neurological. Everyone seems satisfied it's getting better now, it's just taking a very long time to strengthen and for her to get full control.

we were on 4 at 9 months, I would do it gradually you could do 4 bottles then wait for eating to improve then drop another.

you can always give another bottle some days if worried about intake but best to have a routine of 4 then 3 bottles per day
