Tummy pain after first solids?? -Help Please!

Five month old DS had a few spoons of baby rice today as paediatrician told me to get started on solids to help with suspected reflux. It's now five hours later and he is arching his back and screaming. The arching is one of the symptoms i was trying to allieviate with the solids but now he seems far far worse.
Anyone have any ideas what is wrong? How to help the poor little mite?
Is this a normal response to first food? -I don't remember it with DD.

it could be unrelated, but no, i wouldn't say it was a normal response.

what did you mix the rice with?

Thanks TIY. Mixed with formula. (He is BF apart from an 11pm formula feed introduced about ten days ago to give me some respite from the constant night feeds.)

hmmm, you see I was wondering if it could be something like a dairy intolerance.
has his reflux or anything been worse since you introduced the formula feed?

with ds2 his reactions to dairy/egg in my breastmilk have got so bad that i've had to cut both out completely. and it sometimes takes a coupole of days of it building up to reach a crescendo where he is just really, really unhappy.

the back arching and unexplainable screaming are symptoms that we get here with him.

Thanks again for answering. He's worse again this evening. I don't think it's only since the formula, but now i begin to doubt myself... Also don't feel it's related to diary in my diet as i've hardly had any recently. I'll definately try a total ban though.

Do your DS's symptoms go completely when you cut out dairy?

It may just be that his gut isn't ready to cope with solids yet. This is the reason that the weaning age was moved to 6 months - some will be ready before but some won't, and there is no way of knowing.

Alternatively, it could be milk intolerance or his reflux playing up as tiy suggested.

I also had to give up dairy totally until dd outgrew her intolerance at 19/20 months. It takes a couple of weeks to clear completely from both of your systems though.

Be aware that it's quite common to have milk intolerance and reflux together, so symptoms may not totally disappear even if it is this. Dd had silent reflux to go with her intolerance.

AR, yes, his symptoms are completely gone when I cut out dairy and egg totaly, but it does take a little while for it to take effect as the proteins can hang around in your body and his for a while after you stop eating it.

as CSWS says though, if he has reflux it probably won't take all his symptoms away, but it may make it a bit easier. (if it is an intolerance that is)

Ok thanks both of you. -I'm going to try the dairy/egg thing. Just to check: does this mean all sources of egg and milk (eg cake or whatever made with one or both)?

thisisyesterday · 28/04/2008 19:44

sorry, very late reply.
in my case, yes, it is all sources of egg and milk.
I noticed to start with that ds reacted badly if I ate things like egg sandwiches, or quiche, it then got worse and worse until I couldn't even eat cake without him starting to vomit after the next feed.

the milk he is not as bad with. his reaction is much milder, but still there unfortunately.

if you do cut them out it's best to do it one thing at a time, so I would start with dairy and work from there. give it 2-3 weeks to get comepletely out of both of your systems and then evaluate and see if he is any betyter. If you think it has made a difference you then need to test it by having milk for a day or whatever and seeing if he reacts
