How do you give your baby water without them getting soaking wet?

DS has a a cup with the mouth bit that you sip from but he tends to wave it all over the place and ends up really wet. He does like it and drinks a bit and cries if we take it from him but I don't want him soaked through all the time! Any suggestions? He's six months btw.

Mine has water from his milk bottle. I know you're supposed to get them used to a sippy cup, but like you said it means a drenching every time!

DS loves his - we tie a muslin round his neck under his big and drape it all over him so he doesn't get too wet other than his face.

Some sippy cups are much 'drippier' than others - the Tommee Tippee basic ones with teh flip spout are the best ime and don't drip too much.

under his bib, sorry

PixelHerder · 21/04/2008 11:45

Of course you can get some 'non drip' ones with valves, but my DD never got on with those as you have to suck really hard so she gave up!

we found the Avent magic cup the best of the "non-spill" ones, but ds didn't get to grips with it until he was about 8-9 months. we ended up using one of these Tommee Tippee cups as they're not totally non-spill but don't spray everywhere if lo waves it around!!

PixelHerder · 21/04/2008 12:04

Yep those are teh Tommee Tippee ones - bargainacious too!

also (and i may get flamed for this) try putting juice in instead of water. Rocks Organic cordial is just fruit, sugar and water and no nasty sweetners etc, so is best for them imo (provided you brush teeth etc) or Suma do yummy fruit squashes with no added nasties.

i found ds was much keener to drink from his cup when it was a bit sweeter - he also drinks water fine now but has juice at home. both formula and breastmilk are very sweet, so babies have a naturally sweet tooth. with my ds i found it easier to go with it and gradually introduce less sweet things as time went by! (anything for an easy life, me!)

I've bought some long-sleeved waterproof bibs from John Lewis as I was having the same problem with my DS spilling water all over himself, the bis have helped keep him mostly dry, apart from his legs!

Stefka · 25/04/2008 13:03

Thanks weeglenny I got one yesterday

Hey! I had exactly the same problem.

I now use a plastic tommee tippee bib with in built catcher PLUS one of the fabric tommee tippee bibs with thick round neck bits, if you know what I mean, over the top. Works perfectly 95% of the time!

DS has got MUCH better at drinking in the last few days though. We started assisting and making sure that after two sips we took the beaker away until he'd swallowed and then offered it again. He now seems to do this himself. More than two sips in his mouth and he cant swallow it all and it ends up coming out!

For what its worth, my HV strongly advised against the non spill cups due to the need to suck and the effect that has on teeth development etc.

Put the water in a bottle.
