Bit confused...can you help me?

Right, weaning DD1 was easy- purees, mashed foods, mashed foods with lumps, our food.

Of course, now it's all changed the recommendations are you wait until 6 months (which I've done) then finger foods or mashed foods.

I've started weaning DD2 and had the sole intention of finger foods from the off- sticks of veg/fruit etc but also with spooned cereal etc..

She's fine with toast, baby rice cakes (anything dry) but doesn't seem to like the texture of wet fruit/veg in her hands.

So- here's what I've been doing. Giving formula feeds as normal. 2nd feed with some mashed fruit or veg half way through or after. Mid afternoon in her highchair for some finger foods (dry for now) but I'll try her with other things a bit later on.

She's eating the mashed food no problem and is even taking the spoon out the bowl and feeding herself, bless her!

I''m going to wait until shes eating a bit more before moving on to 2/3 meals a day.

What I'm confused about though is do I move from mashed to a bit lumpier or just chopped up once shes chewing/swallowing better? The DOH guidelines just say mashed on to finger food. I can't really give her Shepherds pie or the likes like that though.

I just wanted a bit of reassurance I was on the right tracks here- bit of a worrier with the DDs!

Anyone?

why can't you give her shepherd's pie?

ess · 21/04/2008 13:25

I meant shepherds pie isn't really a finger food is it. The DOH guidelines make it sound like you should only be giving your baby finger foods once they can handle them.

so give her shepherd's pie in a bowl with a spoon - it's hardly lumpier than mashed stuff, is it?

ess · 21/04/2008 13:31

Yeah you're right. Just trying to make the point that some babies can't really handle/like finger foods and there seems to be a bit of anti spoon feeding feeling at the moment.

finger food just means anything you can pick up with your fingers
shepherds pie is definitely finger food
you are doing absolutely fine, don't worry

Thankyou.

I don't really do finger foods beyond toast and rice cakes - my 8 month old has the same stuff we eat if it's a bit sloppy or I can mash it a bit. Weetabix, shepherds pie, rice, mashed potatoes are exactly the kind of things she's eating.

You don't have to follow the guidelines to the letter - if your older one has turned out fine you obviously know what you're doing.

ess · 21/04/2008 13:35

Think you've just got to follow you're instincts haven't you. Even though DD1 had purees etc I always made it all and offered a wide variety of food. She eats anything now- loves fish, veg etc.

sounds like you're doing fine. My 14 month ld has just started feeding himself with a spoon but before that he had with his fingers - pasta, potatoes and other veg, slices of quiche, yorkshire puddings, onion bhajis, sandwiches - anything really
