He has never been a brilliant eater but since a recent tummy bug it has become nigh-on impossible to get him to eat solids. He whinges and whines in the high chair and throws plates, cutlery, etc on the floor. Finger food gets the same treatment. Have tried giving food 'picnic style' in the front room but he either ignores it or plays with it then throws it on the floor. He must be hungry because he pulls at my top demanding milk (he is still BF three times a day). I am getting so stressed, no way is he getting anywhere near a varied diet, and the number of things he eats without protest is getting smaller every day.

Please help, dunno what to do and I dread every mealtime.

OK, part of this is developmental and although it is hard, please try to ride the wave. Once past 1 children get very fussy and very violent with food anyway and honestly the best way to get through it is not to pay too much attention to the dramatics otherwise (and I speak from bitter experience) you will prolong it. Get some Minadex in (from tesco or boots) to reassure yourself (it is also an appetite stimulant) about the vitamins and he will also be getting a lot from your milk. Go back to purees for a while if he will eat those. if not, remember it si your job to offer the food, not to force him to eat it. If he is hungry he will eat. do not, under any circumstances start to offer lots of alternatives or you will prolong this for ages. My ds1 went through a year of eating only shreddies, apples and cheese, but now is 4 and will try most things - and did as soon as I stopped paying him so much attention. good luck

Thank you BLTN. This evening as I put him to bed I had a quick feel in his mouth and lo and behold, he has a molar coming through. So I think that explains a lot of it (and in a funny kind of way, makes me feel better!).
