My baby wont eat jars!!??

I have an 8 month baby that i have prepared food for since starting weaning. We are due to go on holiday in a couple of weeks so have tried to get him used to jar food so that we can take stuff with us. Problem is he wont eat it, he gags and then gets upset. Has anyone else found the same problem. The jars i am using are the Hipp ones, i have tasted them and admitedly they are nice.

Any suggestions?

well....as he is 8mths, have you thought about letting him start on finger foods instead??? tis the ideal time really to try BLW......and then top up with yoghurts and milk etc to ensure he still has enough calories.

Are you going to a hotel or self catering? couldn't you get a hand held battery operated blender and some little pots and mush up some stuff at the table if it's a hotel, and just cook it up as normal if you're self catering?

lulumama · 15/04/2008 12:08

yes, feed her food off your plate
she is old enough for finger foods www.babyledweaning.com milk is still her main source of nutrition, so as long as she has plenty of that, and some food, she should be fine. toast fingers, rice cakes, steamed veg, chunks of cheese, frittatas are all good finger foods

Or mush stuff with a fork - are they still on totally smooth at 8 months? - mine are 7 & 8 yrs now, so I have TOTALLY forgotten all that stuff!

TooTicky · 15/04/2008 12:08

They do still taste like jar food though.

micci25 · 15/04/2008 12:09

are they more lumpy than the food you feed him? if so try mashing them up a b it more and do this less and less till he gets more used to it.

i have the opposite problem my 10 month old wont eat my cooking she will eat jars, my mums cooking (which is terrible) my sisters cooking dd1's cooking but not mine!!

Psychomum5 · 15/04/2008 12:09

and TBH....tis a wonderful thing that he refuses jars.....you have no idea how stressful many mums find it when trying to get their LO of them onto 'real' food.

honestly.....feel proud that your baby prefers your food

TheBlonde · 15/04/2008 12:09

mine won't eat hipp savoury at all
have you tried plum baby?

kkkkatie · 15/04/2008 12:29

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I am lucky that hes enjoying his home cooked grub your right. DS has tried bread/toast/rice cakes/rusks etc, and loves them, tbc honest i haven't looked into BLW much, so maybe thats where i need to start. Just worry about levels of salt/suger etc... Haven't tried the plum range yet, did look at them and thought the packs looked quite small, maybe i'll give them a whirl...

Avocado, banana. Both can be taken in a bag easily and sliced or mashed up. Are you preparing food for yourselves when you are away or relying on hotel food. Boiled egg, scrambled, ommlette. Mine wouldn't touch jars either but we always seemed to manage when we were out. Fish, small pieces checked for bones obviously.

Oblomov · 15/04/2008 13:10

Yeah, why the need for jars. I have tasted a few myself and find them all rank.
Where are you going on holiday ? Why would you need jars on holiday. What kind of holiday re you going on ? Do you think there will be no food avvailable at all, that ds will like ?

meglet · 15/04/2008 13:28

yes, plum baby is quite nice. Mine refused jars from 9 months and I had to make all his food for him, we did a bit of BLW which I think made him realised jars were a bit yuck.

needahand · 15/04/2008 13:39

mine was allergic to most jars (she was allergic to potato). We went on holidays all inclusive. They always had a big batch of soup somewhere and pasta or rice or something. So we used to put some past and ham or tiny bits of meat in her soup. It did the trick for two weeks (that and ice cream . I think she was a bit older though perhaps 10/11months

donnie · 15/04/2008 13:46

dd2 wouldn't eat jars, they were just too boring; she would happily eat some of my bangers and mash ( as an example) in a restaurant but would not go for jars. She wanted what everyone else was having and it tasted stronger too - the jars are rather insipid as I recall. Can she eat more of your stuff, check high salt tlevels though.

LuXander · 15/04/2008 14:45

My dd (now 1) was like this, the only pots she would eat were by Plum. They're quite expensive &1.99 for 2 buy they have a more "home cooked" taste and texture than most of the jars.
