Managing without a microwave - is it possible?

I don't have a microwave and have a baby due in 2 weeks. Can you realistically manage without one for milk and then weaning? If so, how do you heat up the food/milk?

I've never had one so I don't know what's to miss about them.

I'm not sure about heating up milk but I know the boobs do it to perfect temperature brilliantly.

Otherwise, I would think you put the bottle in a pan of hot water. Not sure though.

Hopefully all will go to plan I will breast feed but am still confused about heating up food - i.e. ice cube trays of food prepared earlier?

If you breastfeed and then wean onto family food, you don't need a microwave.

I don't have a microwave, hate them, ghastly things.
I did have one and never used it.
As ST says, if you feed them normal food (BLW) you wont need to heat it up anyway.
See Aitchs Blog for me about BLW.

it's possible, but i'd go out and buy one.

not for milk or baby food, but for bunging in the contents of all that tinned food and frozen stuff you'll be living on after the baby arrives .

VictorianSqualor · 13/04/2008 17:59

Oh and it;s not recc'd to heat up things in the microave for babies anyway, especially milk, it leaves hot spots.
If you do deicde to do purees etc just shove it in a pan for a minute and stir it over the heat.

MrsBadger · 13/04/2008 17:59

you don;t even need to think about food for 6m so don;t stress

and there's no need to make trays and trays of purees - in fact the easiest way to wean is by offering finger foods off your own plate thus - no microwave, blender or ice cube trays required.
You may find a steamer helpful for doing veg though - just one of those basket ones thta fit over a saucepan

great for reheating takeaway leftovers for a meal as well.

I don't have one - never needed it for feeding dd1 and not planning on getting one to feed bump who is due any day now.

Milk:
Boobs - served at perfect temp every time.
Bottles - Heat with hot water.

Food:
Heat on the hob / oven / under grill. If you want to do purees in tiny amounts, use a bowl over a pan of water on the hob.

Don't microwaves zap all the nutrients out of stuff anyway?

People managed to feed babies for thousands of years without microwaves y'know!

PerkinWarbeck · 13/04/2008 18:01

yeah, we've never had a microwave.

sometimes I think it would be handy though - eg when DD is wailing for tea when I've not even got my coat off.

sometimes, on work nights, and if she's having our leftovers, she eats her dinner cold.

Hey thank you all for your replies, they've been really useful. Will live without one I think.
