Should all my 8 month old's meals be finger food now??

Hiya all!

Been reading some of the threads on here re finger foods...

Been giving my dd (8 mo today!) a mixture of spoon fed food and finger foods. for example, breakfast is usually ready brek with some sort of fruit in which she happily eats when I feed her. Then give her toast or something else to mangle while I eat my brekkie.

Lunch and dinner are a bit more ad hoc...

My question - I don't feel she 'eats' properly if I don't feed her sd most of the finger food ends up on the floor!

Should her meals all be finger food now? She seems to enjoy it more but doesn't really 'eat' mush

Ta all

No, there's no "should" at all. Just do whatever's best for you. She needs to learn to feed herself with a spoon as well so she needs something to practice on. Don't worry.

Oh no. please dont worry. DS is 11 months, and he still enjoys being spoon fed weetabix at brekkie, then toast soldiers himself mid am, then a mixture of self feeding (broccoli, peas and carrots) and mush at lunch time. Dinner is usually meatballs or bolognese and pasta - just prepare yourself for the mess!

Aw thanks....

she's quite a 'laid back ' baby - have tried giving her a two handed beaker but she is just not interested in using it! I usually give her water to sip out of a little shot size glass which she happily gulps the water out of (me holding it though!)

When do they start using the cups themselves?? When do they start using the spoons themselves??

DS started with a cup (spout) at about 8 mths. Not got the hang of a spoon yet.

Although he does try and grab a spoon from me now!

DS was showing an interest in using the spoon at around 8 months. He was about a year before he was any good at it.

Encourage the open cup thing. Spouted beakers are a mixed blessing. We've never used the non-spill ones, but even the basic ones instill a false sense of security. Best for them to learn the consequences of tipping a cup as soon as possible I'd say. DS is reliably using an open cup now at 20 months, but I bet it would've been earlier if we'd encouraged it.

Gingerbear · 11/04/2008 23:37

twinklemegan, I am too scared to use an open cup - we have had too many 'early bath' incidents and DS loves to 'swig' by tipping his head far back and then slurps like his dad supping a pint of beer!!!

DS has only ever wanted to drink water, which makes it a little less scary (until you find that water of all things stains your new futon ).
