I cannot believe the crap in the tesco 3-6 month book by cow & gate

They have a spread on a page in the booklet and it says under 'smoothly does it - stage 1 4+ months'
"Is your baby ready? Your baby is ready for solids if he:

  • Sucks his fist alot
  • Is demanding more milk feeds
  • Appears hungry after a good feed
  • Starts waking again at night
  • Is interested in your food

I am really cross about this as this is misleading as there can be other reasons for those behaviours and nowhere on that page is the DoH guidelines for 6 months plus. If i was a first time mum and read this I would be really confused.

So glad I am going to try the BLW route anyway but this article is so inaccurate! Tried calling their line but lines are close. I am considering wording an email to Tesco and Cow and Gate regarding this but not sure how to word it (post preg brain!)

erm ds3 often does this NOW (except for being interested in my food that is) and he is only 5 weeks!!!

onepieceoflollipop · 11/04/2008 21:35

Oh I had a thread recently about Cow and Gate inappropriately "demonstrating" food in our local Tesco. Will try to find it and/or do link.

MamaMaiasaura · 11/04/2008 21:39

that would be fab lollipop.

Exactly MoM, ds2 here is 3 months and does all of them and has at various times since birth.

well interested in my food more recently as he is interested in everything

can't remember who it was but someone on here posted something along the lines of "My baby watches me read - should i be teaching him phonics?"

onepieceoflollipop · 11/04/2008 21:46

Tis pathetic I know but I have been trying to do a link and can't.

The thread is dated 15/3/08, if you type Tesco, Cow and Gate and search under onepieceoflollipop you will find it easily.

onepieceoflollipop · 11/04/2008 21:47

Well my baby sees me on the computer loads - perhaps she could teach me how to do links?

MerlinsBeard · 11/04/2008 21:50

nah - she is too busy on babiesnet

MamaMaiasaura · 11/04/2008 21:53

here just woke up 3 month old son to type it

Let's hope she is not on "Netbabies" - naughty step for her if I catch her on there.

Awen off you go now back to the gifted talented and beautful topic with your advanced child.

onepieceoflollipop · 11/04/2008 21:58

Quick hijack I had a nosey at your profile to see your 3 month old, he is rather gorgeous.

MamaMaiasaura · 11/04/2008 22:04

right have complained to the ASA and put this as part of it:
'They are giving misleading information on weaning. No mention on DOH or WHO guidelines. Advising that babies are ready for solids from 4 months if they: suck fists, demand more milk, appears hungry after milk, waking at night, interested in food.

In fact all of these can be attributed to normal infant behaviour for example when teething. The whole magazine promotes weaning when solids arent recommended by DoH till after 6 months whereas this magazine is aimed at 3-6 months.'

Tbh i havint complained to tesco as i dont think they will give a fig. The whole magazine is focused on weaning..

aww thanks - havent put a recent one up there yet. Must do so.

Tesco never bothered getting back to me properly although Cow and Gate did. Apparently their demonstrator had no recollection of the conversation she had with me! I bet she didn't. Well I rarely buy baby food anyway (apart from the odd fruit puree) and I certainly avoid Cow and Gate after my experiences.

MamaMaiasaura · 11/04/2008 22:22

am def givng blw a good go with ds2. Uploaded more pics (proud emocion )

Your DSs are lovely awen

This has been bugging me all night. The C&G thing not your DSs!

If current guidelines are not to wean until 6 months why is it even in the 3-6 month booklet at all? surely it should be in the 6-9 month one or whatever the next one is.

I did wean ds1 at 4 months as per guidelines at the time and ds2 at 5 off my own back but in hindsight, if i had knwon his allergies i would have waited a while longer

MamaMaiasaura · 12/04/2008 22:12

been bugging me too

hi awen have just found this. i got that booklet too, it's crap eh?

i think the trouble is that tescos are so trusted - tbh if i hadn't found mumsnet i'd prob take the advice from that booklet

lackaDAISYcal · 15/04/2008 10:54

what I've noticed with all the parenting clubs (it's not just limited to Tesco) is that they fail to mention that babies have a huge growth spurt at around 16 weeks which can also account for the perma-hunger thing that they do.

but, they want you to be spending money on their weaning products so the sooner they can get you into buying bowls and spoons and food from their store the better.

It's bloody shameful

...and sadly it's not just confined to the retailers. I got sent an invitation from our HVs to a weaning talk....when DD was 16 weeks old.
