9 month old not drinking milk

Hiya, Over the past few weeks - a month my 9 month old (just turned) has been drinking less & less of his bottles. We used to do 8oz 3x a day plus 3 meals (breakfast, spoon fed, lunch baby led, tea, spoon fed). He then started to not drink the full 8oz, so dropped to 7oz 3x a day. He started teething again around a week ago & this time REALLY bothered him so he started fussing with his bottles & not drinking much, maybe 4-6 oz each time. His tooth is now through & he seems much happier however, he now has a horrible cold. At the moment he drinks anywhere from 2oz - 5oz when he’s having his bottles. We don’t know what to do. Surely it can’t be enough!!! We obviously can’t force him to drink if he doesn’t want it. I have started putting formula in his breakfast to try get a bit more in him & giving him some more yoghurts to try get what he needs but what else can we do?! Should we be worried? Is this normal? Some reassurance or advice would be appreciated greatly as I’m quite concerned about it.

The more solids your baby eats, the less milk they will want to drink – which is normal.

From 7-9m the guide is around 600ml a day (20oz), but over 9months old that drops to 400ml (14oz). Every baby will be different, and that is just a guideline.

If he’s got a cold, then he obviously will be a bit off, but as long as he seems happy and is consuming his solids and milk in general and not dropping whole percentiles in weight, then I don’t think it sounds concerning.

My 9m old refused milk nearly completely, she had reflux and perhaps associated milk with pain. Once she was on solids she just refused milk. Anyway, we saw a nutritionist who said not to worry and give her other dairy instead. She liked cheese and yogurt, so we gave her lots of those, she also liked milk porridge. Also encourage your DS to drink, less fluid can lead to constipation. Your DS may well increase milk once he's feeling better too. My DD started drinking milk again when she was 4, she copied friends. By then the reflux was under better control.

How are things now @NewMum383?

@RappersNeedChapstick much better now!! He’s drinking 6oz 3x daily & back to gods usual self with food/drinking water again now it’s been warmer as well. Must’ve been his teeth & getting a nasty cold. Please to day the least, I was getting quite stressed about it 😂
