Anyone with cmpa got half way up the milk ladder and stalled?

My little one is 21mo and was on soya formula from 3 weeks. Started weaning at 4 months and he was great so started trying him with dairy to see how he'd get on. So basically he can eat it if the dairy is baked in so cake, biscuits, pancakes etc. but can't have the raw dairy, cheese, yoghurt, milk. As he's 20 months do I just stop there as it's unlikely he'll grow out of it or do I persevere even though I hate seeing him react to the dairy? Has anyone's child grown out of a milk allergy at 2+. TIA

Sounds like me as a child. Could just about tolerate the odd biscuit or piece of cake but felt so much better once I took all dairy from my diet. A little hard to explain but it was almost as if I'd been mildly ill for years and now I was better.

BigSaddo · 18/06/2024 15:57

Not much help but my 13 month old has had to stop about halfway, he is the same and is now good with baked/processed. Dietician has referred him for a skin prick test, once he started reacting to the mash/ rice pudding he started reacting to other (non milky) foods too. Also at a bit of a loss but for now we’ve been told to not climb again.
Did you find you’re feeding more milk than you would otherwise? I feel like if I weren’t following the ladder I’d not be feeding him a fraction of what it says to! It seems like a lot of milk on milk if that makes sense.

@CadyEastman I do understand what you mean. I started drinking soya milk 25 years ago because I felt so much better with it than with cows milk. I think I'm slightly intolerant because if I have dairy I get stomach issues and the bloating is ridiculous. That's the problem though, my little one can't tell me if he feels different yet if you see what I mean. To be honest I still stick mostly with dairy free because I hate to see him have a reaction

@BigSaddo you are completely right about the milk on milk. We finally saw the dietician when he was 18mo and id already got him halfway up the ladder so she said we've got to go back for the skin prick test. Haven't received the appointment yet though it's been nearly 3 months 🙄 hope your little one gets on ok😊

My first only got past step one of the twevle step ladder and suddenly at 5 1/2 years managed to race through it all. Her younger sister was about 2 until she could manage step 1 and then she managed the whole 12 steps a week at a time.

TeddyBeans · 18/06/2024 17:33

A friend's 8 year old kept failing at one of the levels and then suddenly last year, completely out of the blue, he passed that and flew through the rest of the ladder. It can happen, but if it doesn't there are so many alternatives now that quality of life shouldn't be impacted much

DuckonaBike · 18/06/2024 17:39

Mine’s 14 and we’re still making progress with CMPA (now almost gone) and other allergies. It can be a slow process. I don’t think we made any progress at all until she was about 4 as far as I can remember.

Hearing all of the stories of DC ripping through the Milk Ladder I might give it a try myself. It's been 11 years so it might be worth a try.

DrDiva · 18/06/2024 20:41

Yes, we slid up and down the lower rungs of the ladder for ages, then managed everything at 9 years old bar drinking milk. Now at 11 we are there - any dairy is fine!

Devilsmommy · 18/06/2024 20:47

This is all really good thanks so much for replying @TeddyBeans @CadyEastman @DuckonaBike @DrDiva @BigSaddo @Sunnysummer24 so I'll just keep trying and breaking off and hopefully he'll get there. Though if he doesn't I'm ok with that too. I'm not a huge dairy fan myself 😅

That's about where we are on the dairy ladder, cmpa and soy allergy as a newborn, now can have baked dairy (in cake/biscuit etc) but not cheese, yogurt, milk as a drink on their own. We have cmpa throughout my family so I'm just pausing the dairy ladder at that level because it's miles ahead of where we were.

Devilsmommy · 18/06/2024 21:38

@Toddlersaurus to be honest I'd be quite happy to pause it there myself. My little one has been on soya since 3 weeks old so he's still got lots of choice with yoghurt and stuff. Amazes me how many cmpa kids are allergic to soya

Afaik the soy proteins are similar to dairy proteins - my LO can have small amounts of either but we use coconut yogurt and oat milk which seems to be working for us.

Sounds like you've hit the sweet spot with your dairy ladder. You can always try again later on - can be a bit stressy when their a bit poorly from neat milk 😥

CadyEastman · 19/06/2024 08:23

Amazes me how many cmpa kids are allergic to soya. Think the stats are around 50%?

It’s because the proteins in them are very similar.

Maybe because he only got soya when he was in the womb it's what he was used to iyswim. I stayed away from dairy whilst pregnant because I didn't need to feel any more crap than I already did😂

The advice the dietitian gave me was if they stall go back a step. But it's hard because say if they can tolerate pancakes but not the next step you can't keep giving them daily pancakes!
Plus hard to know what's a symptom and what's teething etc
Ds is 8 and has asked to try again currently at Cottage pie stage

Ihatewinding · 20/06/2024 09:40

What are his poos like out of interest? Does he have "toddler diarrhoea"?

Just as my daughter has CMPI and was also intolerant to soy.

She had really loose poos and kept failing getting past step 1 until realised nursery had been giving her soya alternatives (we used oat/coconut at home) and asked them to stop. Within a week her poos firmed up and no longer 1-3 sloppy ones a day.

Had a lot of life stuff on so was 6 months later at nearly 3 years old we tried the milk ladder again and she went up to Step 5 really quickly (we tried each new step on the weekend for 5 weeks or thereabouts, so dad on hand in case went wrong haha) so wonder if her gut needed time to rest and heal from soy. She will still get loose poos and facial rash if has a lot of stuff like ice-cream or multiple yogurts on top of other dairy containing foods in a day, but it's so freeing!
So we just avoid neat milk these days and she's happy having what all the other kids have ☺️ and the dairy overload poos go in the toilet/potty so clean up not so bad.

It's also a lot easier to do the ladder when a bit older tbh as don't have to wonder if waking in night screaming due to teeth as mentioned previously, or bellyache, etc. and if a good talker can even ask if had bellyache, so super helpful!

If poos okay then I would give a break and retry in a few months. Who knows when will get the allergy tests through what with waiting lists at the moment 😪 hope he gets up the ladder eventually 🤞🏻

Devilsmommy · 20/06/2024 15:53

@Ihatewinding his poos are actually ok, in his case I think it's the soya that firms them up. Though if he has a lot of soya stuff in a day like yoghurt etc he can become constipated so it's a balance. He won't touch oat milk so can't even get oat milk or yoghurt. He only has an explosive nappy if he's had raw dairy, he's absolutely fine otherwise. As I said I'm not fussed if he doesn't get all the way up, there are so many great alternatives now, especially as he can have soya. I'm a soya milk drinker myself so there's never cows milk in the house anyway 😂 hope your little one manages to get there😊
