How do you first introduce chicken, meat fish into baby's diet...??

I've started giving ds some proper food, i've moved on from just pureed veg, and now want to think about introducing meat protein in his diet but am at a complete loss as to how to go about doing it...

I'm scared he might choke if the meat bits are too large.
I don;t want to blend them to a puree as he prefers a bit of texture.

I guess i should start with chicken rather than red meat or fish...

Any ideas/tips would be very gratefully appreciated.

chicken chops up really finely almost like breadcrumb texture if you work at it. Mince? If you cook it slowly in the oven on low for about 3 hours (like a ragu) with tomatoes etc you don't get that bouncy/chewy texture you can sometimes get with it. Fish is great though, white fish something similar to cod like pollack or coley. I did fish stew as one of the first foods ds/dd had. Obviously fish goes in last minute otherwise it's tough. Both mine love it. Any sort of stew really where the meat has been in on low light for hours, falls to bits. As you might have gathered, my ds/dd get a lot of stews.

We started dd on stewed meat - so quite tender - in bits that she could pick up but that were too big to fit the whole thing in her mouth. at first she just sucked, now bites and chews. lamb is a very pure meat and tender. she loves it. i also give mashed sardines, spag bol and, well, just about anything now. she;s 9 mo.

chicken liver cooked in a stew and pulsed in food processor is delicious and has texture (got the recipe from A Karmel).
Or, if you want meat as finger food - home made burgers or fish cakes are fab. (adapted a recipe from A Karmel minus oxo cube)

chicken soup, lamb hotpot and fish lyonaisse - blended up are the way i started. all recipes in gina fords book on weaning. also introduced all sorts of pulses - red lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans etc - initially finely pureed, moving onto less smooth textures as DS grows.

easiest way is finger food

dd loves a bit of steak - it's too tough to bite bits off so she doesn't choke on it but she sucks it to death

I would jsut ditto Chunkychips -and I'd say puree your meat, but mash the veg, then you have sme texture. I often puree the meat with some veg, and mash the rest, and DD hs been fine. then you can gradually alter the texture as he gets older.

Mild fish cook beautifully with a white sauce, and are very soft to chew.

How old is your DS? Does he chomp at all? if so, with soft stuff you needed worry. Lamb is also quite soft. DD is 8 months, and we stil haven't done beef or pork... IMO too hard to digest.

I second stew meat if you feed him with a spoon.

When I weaned my dd I used stew beef and one of her favourites was lamb in a tomato sauce.

I started off giving my daughter very soft fish, like plaice, mashed up with a bit of potato. Obviously I made sure there weren't any bones.

francagoestohollywood · 08/04/2008 09:20

I started off steaming chicken breast and then minced it and added it to vegetable soups.

wow you guys are all quite adventurous!!
I've only managed pureed fruit and veg, weetabix for breakfast and just started giving him some toast to munch on.
I'll try chicken as finger food for now and see how he gets on with that.
Still scared about giving him fish....

Steam fish and then even if filletted mash with your finger to check for any bones . In water in steamer I put onion / carrot , and a few herbs when a bit bigger. DD (2) now happily eats fish in just about any shape or form

my ds is 6 months old, is it ok to give him fish now...?

If it was me, i'd start with prueed chicken ('im not into baby led weaning, think tis wierd), and get him used to protein, give a few weeks and then introduce fish.

But thats me. I really wouldn't give chicken as a finger food, meat doesn't dissolve like potato, or mask down on the gums like vegs and fruit.

Sexonlegs · 08/04/2008 19:42

I did/do chicken casserole, as the taste of meat on its own is pretty different for lo's to geat their heads round iyswim.

As dd2 has got older the less pureed it is.
