Ideas for toddler who doesn't like potato's

Hi all

Can you give me some ideas for sides for a toddler who doesn't like potato's? She'll only eat in waffle/smiley face form, won't touch mash, wedges, jacket potato etc.

At the moment I alternate between pasta and smiley faces, but feel like she always has the same thing and want some more ideas to try. She's pretty good with green veg, doesn't eat carrots/parsnips.

Thankyou!

This won't be be popular but don't offer Smiley Faces/waffles just continue to offer proper potatoes .Don't offer Smiley Faces until accepting proper potatoes .

I made fish cakes with loads of mashed potato and those went down really well. Maybe adding a bit of something to it will change the taste and texture? My son won't take pasta or rice so potatoes are becoming a staple.

Edited to remove suggestion re wedges as I see those haven't worked.

Will she eat Yorkshire pudding? If so, you could give her a Roast Dinner with Yorkshire pudding instead of potatoes?

Will she eat Sweet Potato? My DD was rather fond of homemade potato wedges as a toddler and you can use them as a topping on cottage pie.

How about meals like:

Spag Bol

Toddler Dahl served with rice, pitta bread strips or Naan bread

Toad in the hole if you cut the sausages lengthways to reduce the risk of choking with some broccoli on the side

Mashed avocado on toast

Eggy bread with berries

Mac & Cheese

Chicken Fajitas

A Savoury Muffin. These are great as you can make them in batches and freeze them.

Sweetcorn Fritters would make a good side too as would Cheese Straws.

Withdraw any fun shaped frozen potato stuff. She needs to get used to the taste of regular potato and clearly probably will like it if she likes the processed one.
Can you cut potatoes so they're round and parboil, then cook with a little oil in the oven?
You could do veg with it and say she can make a face on them herself? Like peas, corn, green beans, baby carrot for a nose etc?

My DS loved potato cakes when he was little, you can use up leftover mash to make them and freeze in batches. Then it's just a few minutes to defrost in a microwave or in a pan?

Croquettes with grated cheese, dipped in egg and breadcrumbs can be made in a similar way, as can rissoles.

Sometimes I make a side of sweetcorn fritters or courgette fritters which just need an egg and a couple of spoons of flour.

Grated potato Rosti. You can bake them or I'm sure airfry them to reduce the oil consumption.

I used to cook orzo in a tomato sauce which always went down well.

Yes this is what is do. There’s no need for them at this age. We’ve just started to introduce smiles to my almost 4 year old for the odd treat, now she’s pretty good at eating her normal dinners, and she’s never had a waffle. Just give her normal food until she’s used to eating it.

Potatoes my dd likes are new potatoes with a little butter, mashed potato, jacket potato although she’s fussy with the skin. Homemade chips and wedges, roast potatoes and croquettes. Other sides we do are couscous, pasta, noodles and various rice dishes like egg fried rice and tomato rice.

Sprogonthetyne · 14/05/2024 20:08

Mine never eat much potatoes, or any carbs real besides pasta. I just give them a bigger serving of veg instead. Nothing fancy usually just frozen carrot, broccoli & green beans.

LondonFox · 14/05/2024 20:54

Bread
Pasta
Noodles
Overcooked short grain rice so it is sticky
Corn

Most carbs are not really loaded with nutritiens so pile up vege and protein she likes

Amazing thanks for all the ideas!

She's not keen on sweet potato either although I haven't tried it for a while so will give another go. I think it's the fluffy texture of potato's that she doesn't like so the frittas and rostis sound like a good shout, definitely going to give those a a go. Think she'll like the couscous too so will give that a go!

She will also eat rice and loves Yorkshire puddings, forgot to mention that. We do dinners like spag bol as well, sorry think I made it sound like she has smiley faces every other day, that's not the case, mainly if we're having a bad food day and I need to do something I know she'll eat 🙈 I also still offer her what we're having potato wise if I'm cooking them anyway.

Thanks so much for the links, definitely will try those 😊

Whole grains are a really healthy carb offering. Quinoa, rice, bulgar wheat, barley, freekah, wholemeal bread, pasta and couscous.

Agree with the others, keep offering real potatoes instead of the smiley faces. It can take many goes before they accept a new food. Even if she picks something up and gives it a lick, it's progress.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 14/05/2024 21:39

Mine were never bothered about potatoes when small. They’d eat them but far preferred sweet potatoes, rice, pasta, quinoa, lentils, grains etc. They’ll eat them now but rarely as we are not big potato eaters.

As others have said, don’t be tempted by ultra processed shite like potato waffles or smiley faces.

StMarieforme · 14/05/2024 21:59

Just going to be a SPAG pedant here. But we all learn stuff every day.

OP a plural dies not need an apostrophe.

So it should be "potatoes"

Apostrophes are needed to show possession (it was John's bike that they stole) or for a contraction (that's like writing that's rather than that is)

I appreciate it may have been autocorrect thought! 😊
