Weaning

9 month old not good with textures

I started weaning from 6 months (currently 9 months), doing purées and baby led too. He only really started swallowing the purées about a month ago, before he was pushing it back out with his tongue. For lunch he has a pouch (which he has all of) and dinner he has a puree I've made (doesn't take much and pushes it back out but I think it's because it's thicker in texture) in terms of baby led he picks up all the foods and puts them in his mouth, sucks on them and then spits back out. I spoke with HV who said to just persevere with textures and he will get there eventually.
Has anyone else had a similar thing or any advice please?

My little one was like this, though he took smooth purée from the start. He didn't really like the more textured til about 10mo I think. Try smoothing it down a bit more and all you can do is keep trying. Pita I know but he will get there eventually 😁

This is fairly normal behaviour - learning to swallow things is actually quite a tricky process for babies to master!

It's a good idea to keep offering both purees and finger foods so he can have exposure to both.

A lot of the very early stages of weaning are about getting used to the different flavours and textures and less about filling your baby up because don't forget that your baby's stomach is only about the size of their fist!

Babies grow fast, I'm sure within a month or so he'll have improved 😀

Can I ask what finger foods you are offering? Our DD only really wanted what we were having so liked things like homemade sweet potato wedges, salmon nuggets or eggy bread.

I'd ditch the pouches too. I know you've probably stuck with them because LO will take a whole one but they're overly sweet and don't allow the mouth muscles to develop.

If you're FFing and he's having over 20 Floz a day, it might be time to cut down on his milk too. You're aiming for him to be having 13.5 Floz a day by 10 months Wink

@CadyEastman I'm offering a mixture of everything really.. toast, potato wedges, carrots, brocolli lots of veggies but also some of the little oat cakes as HV said there good to teach them to chew. I agree I've ditched the pouches and just giving my own, yesterday LO was better and was swallowing more but still not swallowing finger food. I'm wondering whether I need to cut the finger food into smaller pieces possibly.. Milk wise LOs probably having about 21oz a day which we have recently cut down to

I do sympathise. My DS was pretty much like this until 12 months. Turned out he had undiagnosed Tongue Tie.

Neither of mine really liked those little oatcakes, don't think they had enough flavour for them!

Have you tried him with things like a roast potato, strips of omelette or a tuna and mayo sandwich cut into fingers?

Oh really! Sorry to hear that. Did you go ahead with the procedure to get it cut?
I've not tried those, will certainly give it a go tho. Thank you

Rice cakes not Oatcakes. Although if you're anywhere near Derbyshire or Staffordshire you could try their Oatcakes Grin

We didn't but really wish we had, it just wasn't discovered until he was over one. With hindsight I would have got it divided.

It affected taking to solids, speech and sleep for a very long time.

@CadyEastman how is food/speech now if you don't mind me asking?
We were told he has slight tongue tie when he was born but as I was ff she said it wouldn't be an issue and it hasn't been. It's only been the last few days I've thought about it really. Seeing the HV soon so will bring it up then.

Didn't start accepting proper food until 12 months. Ended up having 2 lots of SLT, the last lot when he was about 9. Didn't sleep through until he was 5!
