My DD is 6 months old, cant sit on her own, (which is normal) and feeding like a trooper!
Some babies cant sit independantly until they are 9 months old...not many will wait that long!

I think so too.

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2008 21:52

Oh yes, they need to be able to sit with support (I think guidelines are the same for all weaning, not just BLW).
My DS could sit at 6 months (he did it a couple of days later) but not long enough or consistently enough for a meal iyswim. In fact only long enough for me to take photos

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2008 21:53

But 7 weeks is a loooong time - she probably will surprise you!

Tommy · 29/03/2008 21:53

I sat DS3 up in his high chair and padded it out with a couple of small towels - seemed to do the trick

babyinarms · 29/03/2008 21:53

Nice photo though!

I probably would hold off on letting her hold it cos she will put it in her mouth and if its finger food a bit might break off and be a choking hazard, thats just my personal view , have'nt read up on it or anything.

StealthPolarBear · 29/03/2008 22:09

Well in theory if she eats it she is ready for it.
I personally would wait though
I gave DS vegetable sticks from 23 weeks, he did eat some. Waited quite a while before giving anything else

I think the sitting unaided bit is to do with digestive development that usually occurs about the same time. So one is a good indication of the other, iyswim.

the rapley research was done when all babies were weaned at 4 months, it was just that when left to their own devices they started eating at 6. so no, it wasn't to prove anything, it was just the guideline then. now that the guideline has changed, so if you can stick it out you might as well, just so that you know you did, iykwim? but if the baby is capable, she's capable imo. it's more that i'm a devout coward and would like that in the future if something happened to dd that might be linked to weaning 'early' then if i knew i'd waited i'd not feel bad, iykwim?

some do, some don't. i don't think it's a big deal, really, in the sense that you're the mum, you'll have a good feel for if they're ready to pick the food up and try to eat it. if alarm bells go off and you think that the baby isn't really strong enough to sit up (which might increase the choke risk) then you'd hold off. if not, you wouldn't. what you might find is that the baby herself doesn't pick the food up, which to my unmedical mind suggests that her hands might be developing in tandem with everything else, and when she gets the co-ordination together to pick it up she'll likely be able to do the rest. as i say, at the end of the day all of this stuff is up to you. main thing is that you're not freaking out, because that's going to be more detrimental to a child's relationship with food than the actual delivery method, iykwim? so as long as you're happy that she's propped and can sit for short periods, and you're at 6 months and she's doing it by herself, well, seems good to me.

ah, that is interesting... why is that, do you know?

babyinarms · 29/03/2008 22:45

Yeah in the baby whisperers book (if i recall correctly) she advised 6 months for BF and 4 months for FF babies..not sure why....

babyinarms · 29/03/2008 22:47

Maybe its not baby whisperer, but some baby book....i read so many first time round, thats over 3 years ago so all a bit hazy!

Aitch · 29/03/2008 22:57

i have a theory, naturally, but i'd rather know from the horse's mouth than start speculating.
