Baby will not entertain drinking from a sippy cup... how long before yours took a cup?

I have been trying ds (8mo) with a tommee tippee first cup once a day. On the first ever try (6mo) he made a really good attempt at it and I was very encouraged. However it has been downhill all the way from there, despite me trying him with it at his 'best' time of day. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether he's hungry or not - he just wants to chuck it across the room (and so do I now!) At this rate he'll still be on bottles when he's 30! Aaaargh need reassurance

Not sure what that cup is like but my ds did not take to the cups with spouts at all. I tried him on a doidy (?) cup - despite telling the shop woman that he would just spill it all over himself - and he took to it like an old man with a pint, although I do all the holding and careful tipping. He is just 8 months now but has been at it for 2 months. (he has never used a bottle but it was just completely different from the teated cups, he really went for it.) So I would certainly recommend the doidy, but otherwise I'm sure he'll take to a cup soon, don't worry

My son is 8 months and likes the tommee tippee first cup. Has been using it since 6 months.

I only give my son milk first thing in the morning and last thing at night. The rest of the time he has water from the tt cup.

Seona1973 · 26/03/2008 12:47

I offered a cup of water along with meals from when i started weaning ds - offer the cup and then leave it on the highchair tray for them to examine, throw and maybe even drink out of. DS started using his independently after a week or so of consistently leaving it available to him.

Does he take water from the cup or are you trying to give milk from it? DS was about 9 months when I started offering milk in a cup at 1 feed but I didnt offer it like I would the bottle - I put him in his highchair and offered him the milk along with a biscuit as a snack and let him feed it to himself. You have plenty of time to get your lo onto a cup for milk - 1 year is recommended but plenty of mums give bottles for much much longer than that.

Swedes - you are lucky. Does he manage to hold it by himself?

Ladykay - Tried the doidy with expected consequences - wet mum wet baby! Also have one of those non-spill ones but am aware that doidy and tt cup are the only ones approved by the BDA... So if I do use that it becomes another stick to beat myself up with

I have also stopped trying it every single day, We now try about three times a week as I didn't want it to become a huge issue.

Any further suggestions welcome!

p.s. I use a avent magic cup and a cow patterned cup for milk and the TT first cup for water/juice. The avent and cow cup have valves but you can remove them to make them free-flowing (I leave them in as it makes less mess)

Hi Seona

Currently offering water in the cup (he likes water and would happily take it from a bottle) But just chucks it across the room if I leave it in front of him. He thinks it's just a toy! Thanks for the reassurance though. Sometimes it just feels like everyone else's lo's are progressing and mine is somehow getting behind....I will persevere with offering it at food times since you found that works... Thanks again

I agree with Seona, I always used to offer my son the cup with water at the meal, if he didn't take it I would just leave it on the high chair. I did this for every meal and eventually after a week or two he started trying to hold it, so I would help him get it to his mouth. He is 8 months and now drinks by himself, but water still goes everywhere. I tend to double bib him!

I started with the tommee tippee ones as they are easy to get the fluid out of for them.

I would just put it on the highchair when you give him snacks or meals, and then just let him lead the way. He will eventually get the hang of it. My SILs baby is 10 months and has only now started using a beaker.

DD2 has recently made great strides with all sorts of different cups at 11 months. Have you tried a Doidy cup?

Walnutshell · 26/03/2008 13:10

I'll second (third?) the Doidy. Ds used from around 4/5 months although obv with increasing success as he got older. Not good if you are passionate about non-spill but aren't those non-spill things bad for them anyway?

mylovelymonster · 26/03/2008 13:10

I think it's like anything - persistence and calm Doidy's good.

Tea71 · 26/03/2008 13:49

I'm all for the DOIDY too - my 10 month old now holds it herself and drinks from it without spillage!!
what really helped was when she saw me drink from it too - she always wants to do whatever I'm doing.
