How does BLW work with eating chunks - do they not choke?

DS is 7 months old and whenever he gets a tiny chunk of food that isn't pureed he gags and makes choking noises - So how does baby led weaning work? I know this may be a very naive question!! If I can him a piece of toast, he would instantly bite a chunk off and then make gagging noises

tiny chunks are easy to gag on, especially if they're spooned in. give your baby a hunk of food and he'll only take what he can manage. for example, they only get thier piner grip around 8 ish months whih is when they're better able to eat things like peas without choking. they do gag, but that's just while they learn tongue and mouth control and shows they're stopping themselves choking by pushing the food forwards in their mouth, hene gagging.

the lumps in purees thing apparently owes more to the fact that they suck purees into their mouths in the same way that they did milk, so a lump is A LUMP! iykwim?
whereas if you give them something like a steamed carrot stick, they are in charge of putting it into their mouth (and while they get used to the process, letting it drop back out again until they get a bit of carrot that's the right size. it's quite amazing, actually).
