What's the daily routine for milk (timings, volume etc)?

So I give her breakfast first thing when she wakes up normally around 8am, then by about 10ish she is starving again but won’t eat any food if I offer her it she will only have a bottle so she has a 5oz bottle then I give her dinner around 12.30/1pm but she will hardly eat anything if I give her finger food she will just throw it straight on the floor and if I spoon feed she will have about 4 mouthfuls then won’t eat any more , then she will eat a yogurt . About a hour later she is starving again but will only have a bottle and she rarely eats tea she will just refuse completly then she will have another bottle before bed and still wakes up in the middle of night for one too, people say she will eat if she’s hungry but she literally wouldn’t she would go all day without food if I let her untill she got the milk she wanted 😫

Dropping the middle of the night bottle is the first step I'd take. It will be hard, and will take a good few nights of tears (on both your parts), but she needs to be only eating during the daytimes and not needing any milk overnight.

After Christmas, when she wakes in the night, just offer her a sippy cup of water for a drink, make sure she has whatever comforters she normally has at night (Teddy, dummy whatever) say goodnight and leave. Repeat every night. The milk during the night has to stop.

I was going to say the same. Start with night weaning. Once you've got that cracked drop the mid morning one. Offer her a cup of cows milk and a snack instead. Sounds like she may tantrum but she will probably drink the milk at least, just make sure it's a cup so nowhere m at as much as 6 Floz.

Distraction may help, like having a snack at playgroup or putting a program on tv whilst she eats the snack.

Once she's got used to that, drop the afternoon bottle and give her a snack and a cup of milk again.

It might take time but really she only needs 10 floz of full fat cows milk a day, the rest should be coming from food. If she's on any type of formula I'd swap her over to cows milk as the added iron in follow-on and toddler milks can actually suppress their appetite.

I'd speak to the GP to maybe get a (speech and language?) referral to check that she doesn't have any physical issues with swallowing

clpsmum · 22/12/2023 07:42

Could it be sensory processing disorder or something similar? If she will only eat things like yoghurts and smooth foods when she does actually eat I would suspect it could be sensory. Can you call your gp or heath visitor and ask them for some advice. If it is something like spd she won't eat if she is hungry so you will need professional advice. Sending hugs it's tough being a mum xx

Only wanting milk and smooth foods could also be a sign of Tongue tie or ARFID as well as a sensory processing disorder. I'd still start with the night weaning though and make sure she gets a good daily vitamin.

Ask to have her iron levels checked. Anaemia reduces appetite and makes the whole thing a vicious circle.

Sunflower8848 · 22/12/2023 07:55

Swap the night milk bottle for a bottle of water. The baby is getting too many calories from milk and then not wanting the food during the day. She will wake up hungrier in the morning and eat more food. Start reducing the other milk bottles too, eg only give half a bottle. If the baby wants more give them water in the bottle.

That's really good advice Wink

How is this going? We are in weaning hell? 8 months barely eats and cries at most food.

its so tough going through these motions and trying to figure out the best solution
