Does this sound okay?

...Im new to all of this so just want to get some reassurance that this is okay...

Started weaning 1 week ago. DD is 6 months. She is having baby porridge for breakfast, (although will be making my own with oats as soon as im a bit better at this!) followed by a bit of yoghurt.

For tea (no lunch as yet) she has baby rice with a bit more yoghurt after.

I mix both porridge and baby rice with breast milk.

I have made her up a tray of frozen purees (carrot and broc and apple and pear) and will introduce these now the above is running smoothly. Also will introduce a lunch next week too.

Sometimes I have mashed a tiny bit of banana in the porridge too.

She is drinking out of a cup, the tiniest bit of baby juice mixed with water (won't drink pure water yet)

Does the above sound okay? Not confident enough to try BLW...

sounds fine. she's enjoying it, you're enjoying it, what's not to like? you'll be great.

EdieMcredie · 09/03/2008 13:40

Aww thankyou Aitch, that's really nice. I have read your blog over and over, wish I felt confident enough!

I am enjoying it, and she seems to be. Although is waking lots in the night since we started which is very unusual for her. Wondered if it was the banana causing some tummy trouble...

OP posts:
Aitch · 09/03/2008 13:45

could be. or tbh dd's sleep went bonkers when she started weaning, presumably because her tummy was doing something for the first time.
i found that if she ate anything past 4pm, she didn't fill up on milk as much, so that interfered with her sleep as well. it took us until about 10 months before we got to the full three meals, by the way, we weren't in a big hurry to have the hassle.

re the finger food thing. it'll be fine, you'll see. educate yourself a bit in infant resus (link on the blog), you'll soon be confident enough to offer a wee toast soldier. what does it matter if it's all finger food or a mix, really? the main thing, imo, is that everyone's happy and chilled-out around food. that's the best lesson of all. imo.

notnowbernard · 09/03/2008 13:50

I did mostly pureeing with a bit of finger food for dd1 (had never even heard of BLW at that point)

With dd2 it was just too much hassle to be making separate food for the both of them or pureeing everything... there wasn't the time!

So dd2 was given whatever dd1 was having (mashed or chopped up mostly, with bits of finger food too)

By about 8m she was refusing to be fed by anyone so was using her fingers anyway. Messy but she enjoyed herself

I think Aitch is right, it's about keeping it chilled-out and enjoyable!

EdieMcredie · 09/03/2008 13:55

We certainly aim to make mealtimes fun. She makes a huge mess but tbh we think the messier the more fun!! (She grabs spoon and we let her most of the time!)

Re sleep, yes, good point, BM goes straight through them at the greatest of ease so will take some adjusting im sure...

Habbibu · 09/03/2008 15:10

Oh yes, messy is fun! And that makes mealtimes fun, so no stress for you or baby - win win. Sounds fab, Edie.

LIZS · 09/03/2008 15:24

She doesn't need baby juice , most babies don't really need extra fluids until weaning well established or unless it is very hot , especially b'fed. Her disinterest in water is probably simply that.

EdieMcredie · 09/03/2008 16:01

Oh right, I guess I worried as when I tasted the baby porrodge it was so stodgy. She loves the baby juice though.

OP posts:
Habbibu · 09/03/2008 16:04

She could probably just have ordinary porridge, Edie. Much cheaper , I suspect!

EdieMcredie · 09/03/2008 16:16

Yes that's what I posted earlier, im going to start making some out of just oats. Maybe ill wait until the box has gone otherwise it will be a waste.

I know everything 'baby' is a gimic- but it's hard to walk past that ailse in Boots for some reason! again!

OP posts:
Habbibu · 09/03/2008 16:27

Sorry, yes, I read that and then instantly forgot... Edie, they pay people A Lot of money to make sure it's hard to walk past that aisle!

EdieMcredie · 09/03/2008 21:49

Yep that's true, and while there are people like me around they can be comforted by the thought that the money will just keep on coming!

Mind you, only fell for the porridge and juice. No way am I buying any other rubbish.

OP posts:
Aitch · 10/03/2008 12:34

i bet you any money you'll buy organix moon biscuits... i certainly did.

EdieMcredie · 11/03/2008 11:30

What are they?

Millie loved broccoli and carrot! And apple and pear.

Edie

My baby is a similar age and we have just started proper weaning as he has been having 'bits' to play with for a few wks.

I really wanted to do BLW too, and i have mainly, but to be fair he is having a bit of a mix of finger food and mashed(no purees), he seems to be enjoying this. Yesterday he sucked a slice of mango to death, i thought he was gonna eat his little fingers. Bless him though, it was so slippery that i had to help him hold it!

I give him his milk first thing, then a soldier ir two or toast when ds1 has his brekky and maybe a bit of porridge/weetabix.

Lunch has maybe some veg(either finger or mash) and little yogurt

Same sort of thing with dinner and has maybe fruit. The only baby stuff i got was baby pasta which he seems to like and some organic biscuity rusk things. doesnt eat full meals obviously, sometimes just a bit. The only thing im struggling with is his ff. The amounts he is having are varying so much that i dont know what to make up for him.

Mine does drink water and is also getting to grips with his cup but i wont mind him have having a bit of juice either.

EdieMcredie · 11/03/2008 12:29

Oh sounds like you are doing really well.

Well done on the BLW-I must gain some confidence in this area!

I breastfeed so don't have any advice with the feeds im afraid-although can see this would be confusing!

Has he gagged at all? Think im frightened of this and the whole choking thing!!

OP posts:
carmenelectra · 11/03/2008 12:39

Yes he has gagged a bit, but thats all it is, just gagging, no choking so im not bothered in the least!

The way i see it is im not really that much different from ds1 cos the weaning guidelines were different back then so he was on solids at 4mths(maybe less?) and by now he was eating what we usually eat anyway cos hed been on solids for ages!

We had chippy chips Fri and ds2 gave us the dead eye so he had a couple which he loved. Please dont report me as its not gonna be his staple diet!

EdieMcredie · 11/03/2008 13:34

Im on the phone to SS as we speak

You seem to have it sussed. I might start with some toast...

Aitch · 11/03/2008 16:26

moon biscuits are stupidly expensive shortbread fingers, edie, but they're really good for wee babies to hold onto because they're moon-shaped. and they're not that nice because they're not sugary so you don't eat them yourself.

carmen, that's how i explained it to my mum, she was a bit about it until i reminded her that we were all on spag bol by 6 mos.

EdieMcredie · 11/03/2008 19:14

Cor dipped in BM would make them nicer I bet!!

(Never realised just how sweet it is til I began weaning)

carmenelectra · 11/03/2008 21:16

Yes parents forget dont they aitch?!Its just the same isnt it
My MIL doesnt say much, but implies! Forgets that she was the one that put rusks in dp's bottle, not me

onepieceoflollipop · 11/03/2008 21:26

Edie I love your thread.

I was keen to start and do proper blw, but are doing a bit of a mix, mainly mashed food and some finger foods. dd is 7 months next week. Started weaning at 25 weeks.

Aitch is right, about the most important thing being that everyone is happy.

I might not be confident 100% with finger foods but dd2 grows in confidence by the day - tried to swipe a "normal" biscuit yesterday. I let her have it as she had her mouth wide open and was kicking her legs in anticipation.

The big thing I have learnt mainly from mnet and partly from Aitch's info is that I wasted a lot of time pureeing with dd1 and a lot of money on "special" baby food. Am a lot more confident this time round that the carrots I mash are the same and just as good as the ones that Hipp/Heinz/Boots mash and put in jars. There is no magic about "proper" baby food - I am not "anti" jars btw just I like to mash a version of the family's dinner and she loves it.

She does gag, but I notice (like on the blog) she kind of brings up extra saliva to deal with it. It has never been real choking. Also even if you wait until much later to introduce anything chunkier than puree, I think at some point they have to go through the slight gagging stage.
