Please explain baby juice to me

My dd is 5mo and I have no intention of weaning just yet before I start!!

My MIL is obssessed with cordial. Ask for water in her house and it comes with a measure of cordial in it. She calls juice "cordial". We don't drink it at all. For the last couple of weeks she's been going on non-stop about baby juice. What is is exactly? Is there anything wrong with offering watered-down fruit juice if I must or, better yet, water? FWIW I have been giving dd water for the last week or so as she most certainly is getting a bit hungrier - just an ounze here and there and she's taken it no problems at all (and from a cup!).

Seriously, am I missing something here, or is this just confirmation that my MIL is officially batty (she refers to the fish in fish fingers as fresh fish and is looking forward to feeding dd those at the earliest opportunity).

I'm not some sort of "organic quinoa only" person but I'm not feeding dd anything we don't eat at home. Am I right?

'baby juice' is another marketing con where they put some fruit juice in a little bottle at a highly inflated price as it is much more 'gentle' on your lo's tummy. Water is the best thing to give although if your lo doesnt get to like water a little ordinary fresh juice mixed with lots of water would be ok too.

I never used baby juice with either of my lo's as they took to plain water with no bother. You can find these juices with the other baby products in the supermarket

callmeovercautious · 09/03/2008 12:27

It is, as Seona has said, a pile of rubbish designed to get you to spend your money.

Aitch · 09/03/2008 12:31

water is best, baby juice is a con. and frankly, a dangerous one imo with teeth coming through.
there is nothing wrong with a fish finger, though, seriously. i saw it on big cook little cook. they just take blocks of fresh fish, freeze em, coat em (look for curcumin, it's a non-food additivey natural colouring) and then stick them in the pack. dd LOVES fish fingers for lunch and they can be a lifesaver.

MMM fish fingers

I think they are better than they used to be!

I use tiny amounts of baby juice mixed with lots of water just cos she won't drink pure water but it must be limited to meal times and I will continue to try her with plain water...

My daughter hated plain water to start with so I gave her very watered down apple juice. I honestly can't see how baby juice can be any better. If anything, it just seems to be sweeter and I'd rather my baby got calories from food not drinks (not counting milk of course - wish she'd drink a bit more of that!)

She's 18 months now and perfectly happy to drink water, it just took her a while to get used to it.

nelliesmum · 15/03/2008 21:27

My four year old has always refused to drink water, so has had very weak juice and now needs a filling...please stick to the water.

nelliesmum · 15/03/2008 21:29

Incidentally, she was on water until 10 months when we went to Spain with my MIL who first gave her juice ("Poor little thing"), REALLY wish I'd put my foot down!

halogen · 15/03/2008 21:31

Aw, it might not be that bad in the end, nelliesmum. I had loads of fillings (10 or 15) in my milk teeth but have none at all in my adult teeth at the grand old age of 39. So don't beat yourself up!

nelliesmum · 15/03/2008 21:35

Oh, but I do...

halogen · 15/03/2008 21:43

Oh, I know you do. I think it might be called being a mum... If it wasn't that it would be something else!

TheBlonde · 15/03/2008 21:45

my 1 year old only has milk and water
doesn't need juice at all and only gets it if she swipes my 3 year old's (v watered down) juice

I have loads of fillings thanks to bedtime juice as a toddler so please avoid if possible

moondog · 15/03/2008 21:46

Baby juice is aimed at poor deluded souls who think that because something comes in a glass jar the size of a tangerine and is in the baby section then it must be good.

Fucking ridiculous.
If you want to give your kids juice, then buy a 1litre carton (generally for substantially less than the glass jar) and water down.

Zoomum · 15/03/2008 21:47

As far as I understand it, as everyone has said, 'baby juice' is just another product to make us spend money. My LO is now 9 mths old and i introduced water at about 4 months in a cup just for him to play with. Now he's perfectly happy with water and even seems to like it. I wouldn't give him juice or baby juice just because of the sugar.

moondog · 15/03/2008 21:51

Work on the premise that everyone (and I mean everyone) will work as hard as they can to part you from your money by making your believe your baby needs baby juice/formula/follw on milk/night lights/heated wetwipe warmers/nappy bins and so on and so on.

It is all LIES.
