Can i give my 8 month old dd gravy? it is the reduced salt bisto range.

She only has about a tbl spoon (a 50ml serving has 0.39g of salt) but i'm not sure of how much salt is too much salt ...

TIA

no

bluejelly · 06/03/2008 23:22

why don't you make gravy without bisto, eg meat juice flour and water

fishie · 06/03/2008 23:23

sorry. i wouldn't, not because of the salt but because of the other possible ingredients. have a look at the label, i am not familiar with that myself but i expect it is a long list. you can make far nicer stuff yourself, just ask for more info.

LyraSilvertongue · 06/03/2008 23:26

Maybe a teeny bit but I'd steer clear till she's a bit older. Reduced salt doesn't mean low salt.

Moomin · 06/03/2008 23:29

If you make from scratch then yes. If bisto then no

bluenosesaint · 06/03/2008 23:29

Ok. Thanks.

I'm going to sound like a real idiot here because i don't know how to make gravy from the meat juices

Any recipes?? ...

Also, any ideas of what to add to veggies when meat is not on the menu?

Add flour to meat juices. Then add stock. Voila!

bluejelly · 06/03/2008 23:39

I just take the road meat out of the pan, put it on a v low heat over the hob and sprinkle a tablespoon of flour. keep stirring with a wooden spoon. then add ( slowly) some water from the vegetables or just some hot water from the kettle. Keep stirring then pour into a jug.

bluejelly · 06/03/2008 23:39

Sorry I mean roast meat not road!

Moomin · 06/03/2008 23:41

When we've had roast chicken I boil the carcass the next day and make a chicken stock. Then freeze the stock for next Sunday and use this for the gravy - like everyone has said, add flour to meat juices then add stock. But also veg water good as an alternative.

It's also worth mentioning that if you are using shop bought stock to watch out for the salt content in that aswell.

Heniz do a range of salt free baby gravy - you cany get it at Boots/Asda/Sainsbury xx

You can use Kallo very low salt vegetable stock cubes. They have 0.1g salt per 100ml, so it's not a lot. There's a full recipe here: https://www.naturalbeautywithbaby.com/2017/09/12/jonahs-no-added-salt-chicken-gravy/ By the way, 8 month olds should have less than 1 gram of salt (or 0.4g of sodium).

Yes within moderation you absolutely can. My 18 month old has been having it since around 9 months around once a week. I make all his food from scratch, he's never had chocolate/refined sugar, any pouch or jar etc but sometimes Bisto is just so convenient especially when I'm not cooking meat to get any juices. He's a great eater and alittle bit of gravy on his veg isn't a concern of mine.
