Are raisins a choking risk? Solid starts

Hi all, my DD is 10.5 months and I'm in a bit of a rut with finger foods so been looking for new things to try. I've seen a lot of people on here talk about giving raisins but I checked solid starts and they say to avoid completely until 18 months!!! Is this overly cautious? I'm very frightened of choking and haven't dared give even quartered grapes. However it seems lots of people think it's OK?

Almost anything is a possible choking risk. The bigger risk with raisins is that they are terrible for teeth though.

Raisins are hard to chew and sticky, plus absolutely awful for their teeth- one of the worst things. I'd avoid for various reasons personally.

What are you so afraid of? That does seem to be extreme.

DD had grapes from the start of weaning, always cut but we only bothered with halves unless very large. Raisins we gave early too but she wasn’t that interested in them, still not age 4.

They do have to learn to manage pieces of food. Gagging to some extent is a good thing, they need to sort themselves out. True choking is unlikely if you aren’t giving them silly things and are supervising (and they are sat properly etc).

I didn’t give mine a tub of cherries in the car or anything stupid (have seen that!) but really you do need to crack on. If you are going to use childcare they will give them
all sorts from 1.

friends gave them to their kids about 10 months. I didn’t give to my son until about 14 months. But as others have said, they’re awful for teeth so I still only give occasionally.

I really wouldn't give raisins until a lot later, probably 2 at the earliest. Difficult to process in the mouth for someone just learning.

Thanks all. I do give finger foods - banana, avocado, sandwiches, soft cooked veg, berries, pitta and hummus, egg strips - but have been nervous of things labelled a choking risk. You've given me the confidence to try quartered grapes so will do that! But sounds like the consensus is to avoid raisins in any case.

I’ve had similar concerns around raisins

Maybe they aren’t afraid and just looking for advice that doesn’t open with an appalling tone like yours?

Who knows, the world is full of mysteries.

I wouldn't give raisins at this age
