BLWers, out of interest what was the first food your little one tried?

DD is now six months old and been exclusively bf till now. I'm thinking of placing some steamed veg in front of her this weekend to see what she makes of it. I'd love to know how you got your babies started on solids.

Thanks

It wasn't the first food I gave her but the first one she actually ate was a gherkin! Oh and she had also grabbed a malteser from the packet and got it in her mouth before I could stop her aged 4 months

Carrot, parsnip, sweet potato etc all good first foods to try

sweetkitty · 29/02/2008 17:10

DD1 mashed banana mixed with breastmilk, then carrot.

DD2 - erm I found a raisin in her nappy at about 4 months courtesy of DD1 first proper food was carrot.

juliewoolie · 29/02/2008 17:14

satsuma. I was eating it and he grabbed a bit and scoffed it @ 5months.

Lulumama · 29/02/2008 17:16

broccoli and cauliflower florets and big pieces of steamed carrot, frozen banana too

did puree for a bit, but she was such a useless eater that i stopped making stuff for her and gave her our food... before i joined mumsnet and found out it was called BLW

LOL at maltesers and gherkin...

Me too NL - actually put a slice of avocado in front of him today but he just squished it between fingers (too slippy I fear!)

colditz · 29/02/2008 17:20

he aunched himself face first onto my banana, but the first food he picked up was broccoli.

AitchTwoOh · 29/02/2008 17:24

she launched herself at a peach i was eating, it was summer, lots of soft fruit around so she ate a lot of apricots etc. and carrot and broccoli etc.

liahgen · 29/02/2008 17:26

butternut squash. Wasn't a very big eater though and still isn't that fussed really. She's nearly 10 mths now, and I'll sometimes make a rice pudding or egg custard just so I know she's getting some kid of foods.

barbamama · 29/02/2008 17:32

My just 6 month old is big into buttered toast which surprised me when he grabbed a piece I was eating and shoved it in - he is fine with it though and doesn't even gag. Not sure about the whole gluten thing but we have no allergies in the family. I am doing a bit of mashed/pureed stuff but tbh the steamed sweet pot, carrot, brocolli etc is going down so well I will probably stop - oh and banannas and bits of pears get demolished. If I give him anything on a spoon he grabs the spoon and feeds himself with it so I am beginning to think there is something in this BLW idea - ds1 was just having pure slop at this age as I was so worried he'd choke but they clearly can handle it.

Any advice as to when I can move on to yoghurt, bits of cheese etc? Other finger food ideas?

Monkeybird · 29/02/2008 17:34

butternut squash - how to cook without slicing your fingers off trying to peel/chop first?

TrinityRhino · 29/02/2008 17:37

Geckos first food was a piece of broccoli she stole off my plate 2 days ater she was 6 months
she wolfed it done

StealthPolarBear · 29/02/2008 17:54

A stick of carrot, a piece of brocolli and a baby corn, lovingly arranged into an arc
I was surprised at how much he ate that first night, pity he hasn't kept it up

DD1 either a chunk of cucumber out of a salad when she was grouchy in a cafe or a good suck at a banana I was eating. DD2 it was quarter bagels. She kept wanting to bite from about four months so I gave her baby rusks, but her jaws are so strong she was shattering them into sharp shards and then choking on them. I figured bagels were indestructible so she learned to chew on those and I sort of gradually bunged lumps of things in front of her since she never really took to a spoon. Leftover baby food goes in sandwiches or pasta now!
Monkeybird, cook squash with the skin on then take it off if you want. If you roast it the skin goes nice and soft and chewy and caramelised.
