Have I done this all wrong?

Hi everyone, I keep reading conflicting advice over whether milk or food should take priority for baby's appetite, and I'm worried that I've approached weaning the wrong way.

Baby is 10 months old and prior to weaning was EBF. We started weaning just after 6 months and he was on 3 meals a day just after 8 months (I'm also worried that I introduced the third meal too soon..can you tell he's my PFB yet?!)

Baby still feeds to sleep for naps and bedtime sleep. Here is his average day, any reassurance or tips would be much appreciated. BAsically I'm not sure if I should be offering milk before a meal, instead of after? And does this look like enough milk for a 10 month old?

6/6:30am - wake and breastfeed (he's becoming less and less interested in this feed but I still offer it every morning)
8am - Breakfast. Usually porridge with breastmilk and banana/egg and avocado/toast and fruit
9/9:30am - Breastfeed before nap (usually sleeps for 1hr)
12pm - Lunch. Usually avocado & cream cheese pasta/lentil bake/lentil daal/ fish & potato mash
1/2pm - Breastfeed before nap (usually sleeps for 1.5hrs)
5pm - Dinner. Usually similar to lunch
6:30pm - Bath.
7:30/8pm - Asleep
He usually wakes between 1-3 times a night, and i try to only feed him once at around 3am.

Does this sound OK? I know milk is still really important for them up to a year so I'm worried he's not getting enough or filling up on food and then losing valuable nutrients from the milk. I try to offer protein/carb/fat/veg at every meal so I'm quite confident that he's getting some goodness from his food.

Thanks in advance x

Forgot to add he also has a feed after his bath

Sounds fine to me. Are you vegetarian? If not I would probably start introducing some meat.

OneBigToDoList · 22/08/2023 16:24

Thank you! Yes we are veggie but giving baby fish and being careful to offer lots of other protein and iron sources.

Sounds fine to me, just confused as to why you're making the porridge with BM though? Isn't that a huge faff when you could use Cow's milk?

Thesearmsofmine · 25/08/2023 12:00

Sounds good to me. I wouldn’t be offering milk before a meal at 10months when weaning is well established and he is having four milk feeds a day.

OneBigToDoList · 28/08/2023 22:17

Thank you all for the reassurance, there's so much info out there which can be great, but I do find it hard to find my way through it all sometimes!
@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto it is a huge faff! We do alternate with cows milk but when I was worried he wasn't getting enough breastmilk it was another way to add it in x

If they were in formula they'd only need 400 ml a day so you really don't need to be adding in extra BM at this stage. Porridge with full fat cow's milk will be absolutely fine Wink

It seems fine. My two both had cmpa so were in breast milk only as a milk until they were almost 3 as neither would drink the alternative.

Looks great OP 🙂

Seems fine to me OP. Your LO gets plenty of milk. I was worried too, my youngest dropped more and more milk feeds at 11 month self weaned from
breastfeeding. He had lots of yogurt, cheese and I gave him formula (instead of cows milk as that was my preference) in his porridge.

i wouldn’t offer milk feeds before meals, just let your baby have a meal and then he will tell you if he needs more milk afterwards.

also congratulations to breastfeeding so long, that’s great.

SoSad44 · 29/08/2023 06:59

Also I am not surprised he is not that interested in the morning feed if he has a 3 am one. I would try and get rid of that one if you can (I had a 4am feed for ages and was so hard to get him used to feed at 6am instead).

Thanks so much everyone, feeling very reassured x
