Oh god I really should know all this but I'm tired and I need some hand-holding re what to feed ds2 (now 7 months)

We aren't doing BLW, partly because I got stressed by all the gagging and worrying he wasn't eating enough. However I'm wanting to move back in that direction now. He has been eating purees (well, not totally pureed, more sort of grainy really) but feeds himself (I hand him a loaded spoon, he chews on it and gets some of the food in his mouth, I swap the near-empty spoon for another full one). So far he has had butternut squash, broccoli, pear, apple, banana, parsnip, carrot and - er, I'm sure there was something else ...

Can I give him toast? Breads? Porridge? Meat? He has been having single "tastes" so far, should I start giving him blends? He is still only eating about 1 ice-cubesworth of food at each sitting (mainly I think because he gets tired rather than full!) so I can't give a huge variety in one meal.

I know it's probably all in Aitch's wonderful blog but I've been looking at it for about 40 minutes and can't find the info I'm looking for and I'm too tired to keep looking ... hellllllp any advice welcome (except "use jars" )

thing is, though, ceolas, if the baby's not massively keen you could see that as a positive because the alternative is that you spoon feed it into them which they are less able to resist (at first, lol, we get a lot of spoon strike babies appearing on the site after a while). so them not being keen and you not really bothering about that just lets them progress in their own time, iykwim?

Don't feel a bit guilty. I've knitted about 3 stitches since she arrived! I had grand plans to another apple tree blanket for my sister (baby due in 6 weeks). Ha ha!

I hear you aitch and know you're right. This girl is an avid breastfeeder, has refused EBM and I've not been apart from her for more than an hour since she's been born. I kind of had the '6 months and taking a bit of solids' built up in my head but it's not happening fast!

good luck, that must be (literally) very draining.

Well, ds2 had some toast for breakfast today - and once I put a bit in his chubby little paw, he managed to bite bits off and even put the last bit in his mouth! It dawned on me that he has always struggled previously because the food I gave him was slippery (well, duh )! He looked very pleased with himself.

We are having a roast for lunch - might give him some bits of roast parsnip and potato to play with ...

give him some MEAT, g'wan... let him loose...
bug chunks of meat, baby fist sized. i predict he'll go wild for a roastie, dd still does. (so does her father, mind you).

Miaou · 02/03/2008 22:29

lol aitch, babysteps you know! I gave him two roast parsnips, cut into fisty sized bits, and he loved them! Then promptly fell asleep with the effort . I really wish I had done this earlier; when I brought the high chair out for his tea he practically hyperventilated

Have got some pork left over, maybe give him some tomorrow ... I'll see how brave I am

He'll likely gum the meat to death and then spit it out Miaou - they really seem to enjoy doing that. It's good fun, isn't it?

AitchTwoOh · 02/03/2008 22:34

sounds great, especially the falling asleep bit. agree with habs, they normally chew meat until it goes disgusting and grey rahter than actually eat it.

AitchTwoOh · 02/03/2008 22:45

lol at 'oh about 2 secs'. i know exactly what you mean.

Miaou · 02/03/2008 22:45

Thanks for the meat tip

Sherby, that's really comprehensive, thankyou! Lots of ideas. Ds2 is still VERY keen on "milks", as ds1 calls it , so not eating at much as your ds yet! However today was the first "three meals" day so we are moving on apace. I rushed ds1 though so am determined to go a little slower with ds2 this time.
