Corned Beef Hash - too salty for 18mth old?

I've had no response on the Food Thread, so thought I'd try here . Is homemade Corned Beef Hash suitable for an 18 month old or will it be too salty? I won't be adding any extra salt to it. Thanks.

what else is in it? just corned beef and potato?

MrsJackJohnson · 29/02/2008 15:12

how do you do home made corned beef... does it have lots of fat...what's the point of giving corned beef when you can give just beef? Me thinks....

MrsBadger · 29/02/2008 15:19

I think the corned beef was from a tin, then made into homemade hash, yes?

it is pretty salty stuff though

MrsBadger · 29/02/2008 15:26

ok

if you use a small tin (200g) to make 4 portions of hash, and ds eats a whole portion, that's 0.5g sodium. The max amount of sodium per day for a 1-3yo recommended by the FSA is 0.8g.

so as long as he hasn't had anything else with salt in that day (bread, cheese, biscuits, cereal, anything processed) you should be ok...

Thank you. I knew I'd get an answer here. Yes, corned beef in a tin with potato, onion, carrots and possibly some peas. Its unlikely that she'd eat a whole portion anyway and it would be more veg than meat. I'm not really worried about fat content as she is a tiny 9kgs and eats only fresh, homemade food - I just thought this might make a nice change for all of us - and it means being able to use stuff in the cupboard without having to go out shopping.

Interesting!!

Jenkeywoo · 29/02/2008 16:21

It will be fine - it sounds like you've got loads of extra veg in there too. Are your carrots and peas in the hash or on the side? I normally make my mash, saute some onion and mix it with the corned beef and mash, it then goes in the oven to crisp off and we have it with extra veg and gravy. I always have corned beef in, sometimes you need a nice easy meal.

MrsJJ - in what way interesting? I don't feed my child rubbish - I don't think some tinned corned beef once in a blue moon will be a problem. Using 'real' beef would defeat the object - surely that would make it a cottage pie. She has never had chips, crisps, processed meat (not even a Greggs sausage roll ) so I will not be made to feel guilty for trying to introduce a little extra variety.

Mejon, CHILAX!

I haven't said that you feed your child rubbish.

it is interesting because i haven't thought of perhaps offering this kind of food in an emergency. I'd like to try it first before feeding it to my kids. That's all!

FasterPussyCatGrrrl · 03/03/2008 13:09

DS1 loves it, he's 20mths. i don't add extra salt, and use reduced salt corned beef. I add onion, potato, garlic and herbs, and serve with veg.

padboz · 03/03/2008 13:16

out of interest - does anyone know what salt does after a year? I understand that before 12 months it can be lethal, but after that is it about not encouraging a taste for salt to avoid strokes etc in later life (and therefore something that can be worried about most of the time but can relax about every now and then) or can some harm be done on a specific day if you go over board with the cheese, bread, breakfast cereals blah blah blah?

mejon · 03/03/2008 15:36

Apologies Mrs JJ - I got the wrong end of the stick! We had it for tea on Saturday and DD had it for lunch yesterday and enjoyed it very much.

But who even buys corned beef in the first place, so as to have it in a cupboard crisis?

MrsBadger · 03/03/2008 15:41

padboz, too much salt can still overload their kidneys at any age but I guess the damage comes from eating too much salt all day every day rather than from the occasional cheesefest.

Ivymay01 · 15/01/2015 21:05

Sounds tasty, when I do corned beef hash I layer the corned beef in an oven proof dish pour over a can of baked beans and then put mash on top with some grated cheese over xx ( would that be too salty for 9 month old ??) xxx

GetHappy · 19/01/2015 18:05

sounds good and i think i will be trying this on my dd who is 14months

I do agree with everything in moderation but if i give my dd a food with slightly higher salt i just make sure her other meals thats day are low
