Great eater turned one and now fussy/refusing spoon

DS had been one of those babies that lets you come dangerously close to being smug. He had an enormous appetite and would eat pretty much anything if you could mash it and spoon it in. He was doing well with finger foods too.

In the past few weeks he’s developed a real aversion to being spoon fed and is also fussier with finger foods. He started nursery a couple of weeks ago, although this began just before that. They say he’s largely a good eater there but I’m now sceptical.

For the past couple of days he’s been home and only really wants to eat bananas, toast, cheese, blueberries and weetabix (breakfast is about the only time he’s happy to see a spoon).

Is this a common phase as he become more independent? He was extremely under weight at birth and before starting solids so I’m very anxious about him going through a prolonged drop in calories.

Any tips for popular finger foods?

Has he got teeth coming through? There was a major correlation between teething and appetite ime especially molars.

I don’t think so but I’ll have another look. He’s had four top and two bottom through without much disruption.

When you say he was extremely underweight, which centile was he on?

TheShellBeach · 19/08/2023 16:16

What does he weigh now, OP?

Definitely a common phase, give him the spoon to crack on himself. Few babies want spoon fed by 1 ime

He had IUGR and was under 0.4th percentile at birth and stayed that way until about seven months. He was 40th when age corrected at the last weigh in but he’s still in 6-9 months clothes and the paediatrician doesn’t think he’s finished his catch up growth yet.

He likes having a go with the spoon but doesn’t really get much in his mouth.

Have you tried two spoons? He gets to use one and you pop the odd spoonful in with the other spoon?

Yes! It seems to be the best option at the moment.

Why not give him a baby fork, you "stab" the food first and then let him transport it to his mouth
