The Yoghurt Dilemma

Can you mumsnetters help? Just reading about fussy eating and came across a thread which said babies should only have plain yog with fruit added, not fruit yoghurts.

I've been giving my dd Rachel's Organic fruit yogs, which she LOVES and polishes off a whole one in one go.

Is this a bad thing?!

Aren't the 'baby yoghurts' just as full of sugar as the normal ones?

Anyone know what's the best kind to offer?

unless she's prone to seizures then a little bit of sugar isn't a big deal. Long as you brush teeth etc.

Hi there - I don't know about the Rachel's ones - check the label - but most fruit yogs even organic have a high refined sugar content, sometimes it's the second highest ingredient even higher than fruit in some brands, which babies don't need and shouldn't really get accustomed to so the odd one won't kill her but maybe you should alternate with plain natural yog and fruit. IF you have a hand blender then is easy to make your own, or use those baby fruit pots, the ones that are 100% fruit and mix with plain yog. I can't remember exactly but I'm sure the advice for weaning is to avoid refined sugar and also salt as much as possible until over 12 months?

FrannyandZooey · 28/02/2008 18:38

mix the sugary kind with natural yogurts, or mix natural yog with pureed / mashed fruit

it won't kill her to have the sugary kind but they are pretty sweet and she will be quite happy with a less sweet version if you give it

I suspect baby yoghurts are a rip-off, and Rachel's Organic are v. nice. That said, DD does get plain natural yoghurt with mashed banana and whatever other fruit is to hand because it's cheaper and often much nicer.

nmc - does sugar affect your dd's seizures? poor love!

Little Rachel's ones don't have any refined sugar - they are just sweetened with fruit puree and apple juice.

Adult Rachel's are pretty sweet.

But tbh I wouldn't stress, it's not like you're feeding her pureed milky bars. The main advantage of plain yohurt with fruit puree is that they are CHEAP!

Rachels baby yoghurts do not have any added sugar but are sweetened with fruit juice and I'm sure they are absolutely fine. I give these to my baby and also the yeo valley fruit tumbles which do have a bit of sugar but are nothing like as sweet as ordinary brands.

sorry, crossed posts with TYV!

MrsBadger · 28/02/2008 18:46

so long as you're aware of it it's ok

it's people who think Petits Filous are only healthy fruit and fromage frais that earn my scorn

mylovelymonster · 28/02/2008 18:51

I have given mine both Rachels (sweetened with conc apple juice, i think) and Yeo valley fruit tumbles from about nine months. She loves them. Plus they're pro-biotic which is supposed to be good for the digestive/gut flora?

Not petits filous having looked at the sugar content.

BumperliciousNeedsaGlassofWine · 28/02/2008 19:00

The sainsbo's kids fromage frais are only sweetened with fruit juice.

Completely irrelevant but when i was little i used to think that fromage frais were made by a company called Arshfray and were "from Arshfray"

needmorecoffee · 28/02/2008 19:27

habibbu, we think so but we're not sure. At some point she's going on the ketogenic diet so no carbs at all. Just lots of fat, oil and a toddly bit of protein.

mylovelymonster · 28/02/2008 19:28

that's so sweet. I remember 'Yoplait? Eetz French four yum'

Habbibu · 28/02/2008 19:33

Hope something helps, nmc. Sounds like you and dd could both do with a bit of a breakthrough!
