Eating wet wipes

My toddler eats a lot but mostly healthy so I’m not worried -
however likes to eat wet wipes??!!! Is this normal?!
not sure if it’s teething or if he’s just that hungry all the time?! But it’s seems to be soothing- is it bad to let him do this?

mph he doesn’t actually eat them, just sucks on them really aggressively though!!

They are probably harmless - they are produced for babies so I would be surprised if they were toxic. It's not something I would encourage though. I find that once they are toddlers, a damp flannel (or cloth wipe) is much more effective at cleaning up messy hands and faces, so I would switch to using those and keep wet wipes for nappy changes.

My dd did the same for about a year what kind of baby wipes is it I tried giving her a wet flannel and it did work sometimes but she stopped altogether in the end x

Why are you letting him?! Have you read the ingredients?

if the wipes are being utilized for external use as intended, there is a low risk of wipes being toxic or harmful to the skin, especially if the wipes being used are formulated without harsh ingredients. Wipes are not edible, however and can be toxic if ingested.

Thanks NannyR. I might have to hide the packets. He points to them and starts crying until I give him one to keep him happy but it feels it’s such a weird parenting fail :/

I use water wipes.
used to use rascal and friends until he started liking the wipes so much so switch to water wipes as it’s only water and fruit extract but still weird :(

Is he teething? Might be the cool squishy ness on his gums he likes? I’m sure there are better alternatives

Jj7789 · 29/07/2023 16:08

Oh I didn’t know that :(

Why on earth would you do this? You’re the parent!

Try a wet flannel

Yeh I do wonder if it’s a teething thing as seems to soothe him right away. He doesn’t seem to like regular teethers.

It's not the taste then if you are using water wipes so it must be the texture/feel. I would give him a cold wet flannel or a muslin instead when he asks for one and see if that satisfies his sensory need.

@Guineapigwoes @NannyR @mummybear247
thank you for your advice, I’ll for sure try the wet flannel/muslin
