Best cereals for 10 month old baby?

My 10 month old doesn't like porridge or weetabix so I was considering trying a cereal she can pick up since her pincer grip is getting quite good. What would be a good option to try? Are shreaded wheat (eg shreddies - see link) OK if soaked in milk or are they a choking hazard? I was also looking at hoop cereals but couldn't spot one without much salt. Which cereal do you give your babies?

Oh I give them all of those and they seem perfectly fine :) current baby is not much one for cereal so she usually has something bread based or an egg and avo.

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 18/05/2023 16:07

Milk or dry is fine I’m sure.

The size is fine but I would be trying to stay away from
UPF as much as possible.

Do they have to have a cereal? There are better breakfast choices; like @MyFaceIsAnAONB suggested.

I think we’ve been sort of conditioned to think breakfast has to equal cereal and it really doesn’t.

My 1 year old likes weetabix, so it’s easier. But we do scrambled egg and toast, chia seeds and Greek yogurt, pancakes, banana French toast.

Cereal isn’t often the best choice anyway. And there are lots of quick and easy options

Have a look for recipes for baked oats for babies / toddlers. My DD won’t eat porridge but loves baked oats cut into bars. The ones I make have rolled oats, milk, peanut butter and banana. You can freeze them too.

I'd be more worried about the sugar content than the salt to be honest in any cereals others than Weetabix and porridge. Cornflakes aren't too bad, own brand ones are best.

I make porridge bars and Weetabix muffins for my little one which she picks up to eat - do you think you could entice her with porridge that way instead? My daughter won't take anything off a spoon so I've had to be creative!

Thanks all for the advice. I do try to do a variety, it’s just convenient to have a cereal option, for example if we are out of bread. We usually do toast (with avocado, cream cheese or peanut butter) or Greek yoghurt and fruit but was just looking for more variety. She likes eggs but I was laying off those as she is constipated recently. Have tried cooking the porridge as bars and muffins but she didn’t like them and have also tried a variety of pancake recipes but she wasn’t keen.

I was hoping to find some more non-messy (not yoghurt!) and no cook ideas for when I go back to work shortly.

Both of mine liked ready brek with either chopped banana or berries.

If you want something convenient and he's not fond of cereal, could you bake a batch of baby muffins and freeze them?

Fruit is fine though. Milk and a banana is fine at this age, especially if he's going to get breakfast at nursery Wink
