Some weaning questions - volumes, finger food etc

Hi

Thanks to all of you who helped me with my cold and weaning question last. LO seems to be on the mend and appears to be enjoying her food again.

Now we are getting back on track just wanted to ask few qs:

  • Breakfast - how do you do the milk and solid combination? Gina Ford suggests tier feeding but not sure what I think of this, currently I do full feed and solids about 30/45 mins later but LO (who is just over 8months) takes about 2 tablespoons at breakfast - is this volume ok or would tier feeding helped increase amount?

  • We are still doing an 11am milk as our weaning started a bit later than 6 months but am gradually reducing volume with aim to drop soon. Again Ms Ford says drop when protein established but LO not overly keen on much chicken, lentil etc - when did everyone else drop and what made you do so?

  • Juice or water? I just offer water, should I be offering juice too?

  • Finger Food - LO likes Organix Carrot Sticks but not into much else - any other ideas that are quick to prepare?

  • Volume of food - LO tends to take 2 tablespoons at breakfast, sometimes 3 to 4 at lunch and about 3 at dinner. Is this ok for 8 month old who started weaning about a month later than 6 months?

Thanks in advance for any answers - just interested to get others ideas and povs.

Pip

DS is 9mo

I offer water with meals, no juice yet.
We still have 4 good milk feeds a day, and personally I have no intention of trying to cut down until DS does it himself.
He has morning milk at about 7-7.30ish, then he eats toast for breakfast, about 8ish.

Usually roll, cheese or ham, cucumber and fruit for lunch, then steamed vegetables (broccoli, beans, asparagus, cauliflower, carrot, parsnip, sweet potato...), plus potato or pasta or something plus some meat usually for his dinner, plus some fruit for dessert.

I don't measure how much he has, just offer as much as he wants.

Dd2 will be 1 on Saturday and like Flowery's lo still has 4 milk feeds a day. She does have a breakfast, lunch and dinner time but tbh dont really measure how much she actually eats! I just offer her stuff and let her get on with it. Some days she eats more than others.

I too only give water at meal times although she drinks quite a bit of water in the day and sometimes has some with a snack in the afternoon.

Thanks Karen and Flowery. Think I may be feeling that I have to keep up with others. One of my friend's LO is on 7 tablespoons/meal and another counts all the helpings of carbs and protein etc and I feel so behind them!

My LO seems to dislike chicken and fish and lentils - anything with great protein value - any ideas here welcome, is this just a taste my LO will develop or am I being too hopeful??!!

I'd keep offering those things. I seem to remember hearing somewhere that LO can be offered things a ridiculously high number of times and then decide they like it, so persevere.

DS loves rare roast beef, slices of cheese, thinly sliced ham, although he is keener generally on the vegetables, especally green ones!

Hi tbh I dont make purees or anything like that. I do BLW and it really is great. It also means that you dont get obsessed with counting spoonfuls etc. Finger foods that my dd has are

toast
sticks of apple/pear/carrot/peppers
cheese on toast
eggy bread

She now eats these things. To start with she only really sucked and chewed and then spat out but thats fine. Try not to get too concerend!

Pipsicle · 18/02/2008 20:12

Karen - what does eggy bread entail exactly - lI like the sound of that.

Hi Flowery - have you calmed down yet?? I could tell you were having a bad day from that other thread!!

flowerybeanbag · 18/02/2008 20:41

Yes, calm now! Deciding to view it all as highly amusing rather than irritating!
