Moving on from pouches

DS is 8 and a bit months and we’ve been weaning since just before 6 months. He started really well on mainly BLW and wouldn’t be spoon fed. He’s never seemed to enjoy or eat particularly bitter foods or green veg, which I know is normal, and until last week wouldn’t be spoon fed. He regressed hugely in not eating much/anything for a few weeks due to 4 teeth coming in over a period of 4 weeks or so, and we have tooth 5 on the way so he’s not super comfortable.

We’ve now this week had success with spoon feeding and has had yogurt and savoury pouches for breakfast and then lunch and dinner, along with some finger foods (breadsticks and cream cheese for teething, sucking orange wedges which he loves, for example) but will only have half a pouch at a time and then clamps his mouth shut. I’ve been buying pouches so it’s less food waste and easier for me!!!

Is there a certain time I need to wean him off the pouches/lumpy spoon-fed food? We’ve just got some food back into him which is a win, but I know it’s not ideal long term. I hope his interest in bigger bits of food will come back because it will make life easier to try to get him to self feed things like pasta. Currently he’s not all that interested in “normal” food like pasta bread etc.

I suppose I just want to know if half a pouch plus a few other small bits is normal, as I see all my friends babies eating whole pouches or big “real meals” plus toast and fruit etc. DS a a chunky and tall lad anyway on very high percentile, 9.8kg at 8 months - so he won’t waste away - but I want to make sure he has good associations with eating.

I think by 10 months he only needs 400 ml of formula a day, if you are FFing so I'd be aiming to ditch the ouches by then?

For now though, if he's uncomfortable with a tooth coming through I'd be giving him Ibuprofen and a teething gel and maybe think about reducing his milk once he's feeling well again.

My 8 month old typically eats half a pouch at a time still for lunch and dinner. Otherwise she is just sucking finger foods and not really eating any of it. It is a bit of a concern when you see other babies with full meals! I've tried to keep her milk amounts up to compensate but then of course she's less hungry for food. It's difficult to know what to do for the best.
