Gave my baby Greek style yoghurt instead of Greek yoghurt, what’s the difference?!

I’m panicking now because all I can find in shops is “Greek style yoghurt”. I can’t find anything with just “Greek yoghurt” on it.

shes 8 months old.
I assumed it was the same thing. She hasn’t had yoghurt before (or any dairy for that matter apart from her cow and gate formula, if that counts) so I wanted to try her on some. I gave her a baby spoon full of it and she seemed to like it. But I’ve been looking it up and apparently Greek style and Greek yoghurt isn’t the same thing?!

im panicking now. Where can I find full fat Greek yogurt then? I looked in sainsburys and Tesco and can’t find it.

You are panicking over yoghurt? Really OP?!

tealandteal · 18/03/2023 18:59

Is it one of those things where they’re not allowed to call it Greek if it’s not from Greece?

They taste the same to me, and as long as both have no sugar then there’s not much difference. Gently, why are you panicking?

Believeitornot · 18/03/2023 18:59

What are you worried about?

VeryLowTum · 18/03/2023 19:00

Just means it's not from Greece. Your baby is highly unlikely to care.

Faceplant66 · 18/03/2023 19:00

Let’s assume that was for effect - Greek style thinner and less protein. Bit more sugar but meh. Either is obvs fine!!

Minimummonday · 18/03/2023 19:01

Just make sure it’s not Danish. That’s deadly

bellac11 · 18/03/2023 19:01

There isnt a great deal of difference, greek yoghurt is very strained. Greek style yoghurt is not so strained

Some people say that greek yoghurt must be made with goats milk but Ive seen proper greek yoghurt made with cows milk

It annoys me that its hard to find genuine greek yoghurt rather than greek style but theres nothing wrong in either for your baby

NuffSaidSam · 18/03/2023 19:02

All yoghurt is fine! Probably avoid a muller corner for the time being, but really there's no need to panic!

PeekAtYou · 18/03/2023 19:02

Relax

Greek yoghurt is probably yoghurt made in Greece
Greek style yoghurt is probably yoghurt made in another country. They can't call it Greek yog because the EU has strict rules about countries owning their food trademarks. Eg Cheddar has to come from Cheddar UK

Greek style is cheaper ime Most shops here stick Fage which is Greek yoghurt if you want to try it

scintilla87 · 18/03/2023 19:02

Nothing, Op. It’s because of EU labelling laws, unless something was made in Greece you can’t call it Greek, hence Greece “style”.

DojaPhat · 18/03/2023 19:02

Is she your first?

Odile13 · 18/03/2023 19:03

You can give Greek yoghurt or Greek style yoghurt - both are fine.

If you can’t find full fat Greek yoghurt then look out for full fat natural yoghurt. That’s fine too and also plain.

DanceMonster · 18/03/2023 19:04

Why are you panicking? Do you think ‘Greek style yoghurt’ is harmful to babies?

Kranke · 18/03/2023 19:05

Why do you think it needs to be Greek yoghurt? As long as it’s full fat and no added crap it’s fine. You could make your own if you’re concerned.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 18/03/2023 19:07

what do you think will happen if it's slightly the wrong type of yoghurt?

i'm not laughing at you like some people above vibe cause this kind of intrusive thinking was exactly how my SIL talked about things when she was quite unwell a many months post partum.

I’m not unwell 🤦🏻‍♀️ I was worried about the fact that it’s apparently made with cows milk instead of goats milk and has more sugar in it

Yes its likely to be cows milk

The sugar thing is a bit disingenuous because by the straining of the yoghurt you remove more lactose which is the natural milk sugars. So yes it has less 'sugar' if its genuine greek yoghurt but its not that sort of sugar

(unless you bought some flavoured thing which has actual added sugar or fruit juice in it)

What harm do you think cows milk would cause to your baby? Formula is made with cows milk.

What do people like you get out of commenting stuff like this? I’ve only had mumsnet for under a week and replies like these a ridiculously judgmental.
panicking is an obvious exaggeration. I was worried about the fact that it’s apparently made with cows milk instead of goats milk and it has more sugar in it.

WeCome1 · 18/03/2023 19:12

Cow’s milk yoghurt would be fine though. Just look for ones with the least sugar.

NerrSnerr · 18/03/2023 19:13

Why are you worried about cows milk? Why would goats milk be better? Unless there is a massive drip feed that your child has a cows milk allergy.

ChildminderMum · 18/03/2023 19:13

Cow & Gate is made from cow's milk and has loads of sugar in it too, it's fine.
