Weaning with reflux HELP

AmberM2022 · 10/03/2023 10:30

So we were advised to start weaning our LO at 18/19 weeks due to severe reflux. I just started with 1 or 2 spoonfuls per day of puréed apple/ pear. Nothing major in terms of tastes and always super blended. He’s now 22 weeks and in the last week we have started to up the intake (still only about 6/7 spoonfuls) of pear, sweet potatoes, avocados, broccoli etc - but he absolutely projectile vomits the food still!? i thought after a few weeks it might help (or thought that it was supposed to) But it’s not, he’s still being sick CONSTANTLY milk and now food (which is just worse)
Has anyone had any experience with this? We are under paediatrics and have been referred to a dietician but have now been told there is no dietician in the area available so could be waiting a while. He has CPMA and is on Neocate LCP milk, so we do not give him any dairy at all.
I tried to give him a stick of broccoli last night in his hand instead of blended to see, and the sick was crazy!! is that normal when you move to chunks of food instead of blended?
Thanks, any help appreciated

Gosh that sounds extremely difficult @AmberM2022. Is he under a Paediatrician?

My son was on neocate and I do empathise with you about the volume of sick they can manage.
We didn't wean until the 6 months mark with him as that was the advice at the time. We stick to very simple purées and Ella's Kitchen pouches which worked really well for him.
He did grow out of the allergy around age 2ish and these days he downs a pint of milk every night (age 12)
I'd suggest take it back to basics and see how your little one goes with just the milk again then go from there. I would also push and push your GP to get either a dietician appt or someone else who can help. It is so hard when you're living it and it feels like nobody's properly listening. I really do remember it well and I hope you get somewhere with it all soon. It does get easier eventually, promise!
I also presume you've already had him checked over for pyloric stenosis. Just mentioning on the very slight chance you haven't- sorry if you've heard that a million times by now!

*we stuck to, not "we stick to". He's not still on purées at 12 years old! 🙈

Sounds like you're really going through it OP, it's so tough when they're doing mega sicks. We also had absolutely epic sicks (with extremely poor weight gain), and I thought they would never end! DC's finally stopped at 6 months, when we started weaning and switched to Nutramigen Puramino. Not sure whether it was the weaning, formula change, or just them finally growing, but the sicks did stop, so there is light at the end of the tunnel. Have you been back in contact with Paeds at all? Sounds like more support from them would be useful. Is LO's weight gain okay? We got a lot more support when they were worried about DD dropping centiles, so may be worth pushing harder if this is also the case for you. We also got an over-the-phone dietician's appt, which I was sceptical about, but was actually incredibly helpful, would that be worth asking about as an option in case it makes a difference to your weight time? Otherwise, is paying for a private dietician an option for you at all? Also, is LO getting plenty of tummy time? We were told this really helps with developing muscle tone to keep the food down.

He needs to try a different formula. Go on the Facebook page for CMPA and ask for advice there.

Just an extra thought - I'm assuming Paeds have tried medicating the reflux? If not, definitely worth asking about this. We tried Gaviscon (helped a bit) and Omeprazole, which unfortunately didn't work for DC, but I know other people have found it's really helped the reflux.

Yes we have tried about 5 of the medications nothing has helped :(

Thanks guys for your replies. I am under the peads and was referred to a dietician but heard nothing, rang peads last week to chase but again heard nothing. This last week he’s completely refusing milk now, gone from 6oz bottles 5/6 times a day to 2oz about 4 times a day!!! I don’t know how he’s still having wet nappies!! I tried him with more food to make up for it but he was just really sick, i’m at a complete loss tbh.
He’s not losing weight really, he’s dropped a tiny bit but just under the 50th centile so they were not too concerned about that!
